Nothing wrong with the 1200/103 combo. I use it.
Tread lightly on the Jolida mods. Some are way, way overpriced for what you get. Also some of the mods are questionable from an audibility standpoint.
Follow Ups:
Thanks for the heads up on the mods. I was wondering why I never found to much about them in in my short search attempt.
Yeah one of the mods costs $1000. Figure that one out!
I can see matched 12AX7s. Tube Depot does small signal tube matching for a couple of bucks.
Other worthwhile mods are Schottky rectifiers, better electrolytics, matched (channel to channel) resistors and caps., and an improved line cord.
I'll see what it "needs" when mine arrives.
And it may be good enough to keep you from further ones.

I'm sure that's a good one. I have close to 100 12AX7s as a result of buying out stores and companies around New England in the early '90s. My best haul was 55 Telefunken 12AX7s from the Grass Instrument Company in Quincy/Braintree, MA. They are especially good because Grass manufactured galvo based EEG systems and polygraphs and had to cull the noisy tubes. The ones that made it to stock were selected for ultra low noise and had red nipples. I paid $7 each for them which seemed like a lot to me back in '92.
Despite their appeal they are not my favorites. To me they sound a little dry and a little lacking in dynamics. I actually prefer some of the newer versions. Groove tubes does know what sounds good. I have a few of their tubes. The 12AX7s I have from them are the "R" version. I used them in my ASL headphone amp for awhile.
The NOS thing is way overblown imo. Many of the NOS tubes selling for big dollars were end of the road ones from when the companies were closing down and quality slipped. Many of the NOS tubes I bought in the early '90s had major defects. I'm still sorting through what I have. It takes a long time and especially so since I go back and forth between tube and ss.
That's why i asked because i can't see spending money on something you can DIY. I don't have the electrical background to know what upgrades would be worthwhile like you mentioned. I do have the equipment and knowledge to perform the task in hand. Keep us updated on your discoverings when they come. Maybe some of this is in the DIY section of the asylum, need to do some more searching, Thanks.
