I am from out of town attending a conference near Grand Central Station. Are there any good record stores within walking distance? Thanks,
Follow Ups:
If you like classical you can go to 72nd and Broadway about 20 minutes on the 104 bus. Westside records is a few doors west of Broadway on the north side of 72nd. They have a very extensive collection. You could walk there in about 40 minutes.
Best place I found was Bleecker Music store at 212) 255-7899 239 Bleecker St, New York, NY.Be weary at bleaker Bob's - (only displays covers, then after you pay slips in the piece of crap albulm and bags it hoping you wont look) especially to out of towners who arnt hip. I almost flipped out when I looked at the Last waltz they tried to sell me for $30 saying how it was a desired albulm and I should be lucky to get it)
As far as I know - no more Acadamy on 10th and University (4th ave)
If you don't know (which you clearly don't. What? University and 4th Ave. are not the same!) then why would you say anything?Academy Records is on 10th St. between 3rd and 4th Ave. and still very much in business.
Go there...
The East Side has always been a record store desert (or has been since I started coming to NYC in the late '70s / early '80s).Once you get south of 14th Street you can hit the East Villages stores - Academy 12th Street at Fourth Avenue for jazz and funk, Gimme Gimme on 4th or 5th St. between First and Second Aves for rock, soul, funk and DJ records, and a few others in that neighborhood including some new ones whose names I can't remember. Rockit Scientist on St. Mark's Place between Second and Third Aves. has good psych reissues and some (highly priced) '60s originals.
Or head west to 236 W. 26 St., between about Seventh and Eighth, for the Jazz Record Center on the 8th floor.
Academy on 18th St. just west of Fifth is, as someone else posted, the best place in town for classical vinyl, and there are good deals to be had.
The biggest selection of used vinyl in the city these days is at Academy Williamsburg... you'll have to take the L train one stop into Brooklyn from Union Square to Bedford Ave., and then it's a couple blocks' walk to N. 6th and Wythe.
Academy's jazz outlet is actually at 10th and Fourth Ave., as other posters have mentioned.
The Stereophile show opens on Friday at the Grand Hyatt next door to Grand Central. I see from the exhibitor list that several of the big online vinyl vendors such as Music Direct will be be there. Also, check out the Virgin Megastore in Times Square. The last time I was there they had a decent selection of vinyl. As I recall its on the street level.
Not exactly walking distance, but you should be sure to visit Academy which is on 10th Street & 4th avenue. Their Classical store is on 18th Street west of 7th ave if Im not mistaken.
Actually, the Classical store is between 5th and 6th Ave. on 18th. It's on the south side of the street.
