There is a certain lack of understanding on how cartridges work. In the case of the Grado, it is built like a MC type, with a large magnet and two pole pieces hanging down to focus the field through the iron piece on the cantilever end and the coils which are positioned immediately behind the stylus assembly. A demagnetizing signal will send a small AC signal to the coils and thus demagnetize the iron pole pieces that the coils are wound on. I do not believe that demagnetizing a Grado Wood body will damage the cartridge as the coils are rather distant from the actual significantly large magnet.
For other MM cartridges, simply remove the stylus assembly and that will prevent the magnet at the cantilever end from becoming demagnetized. This magnet, being suspended on the cantilever end, is significantly smaller and much more prone to possible damage. For peace of mind however, I would contact the Grado factory and ask them.
BTW, the Cardas sweep record also generates a small signal akin to one generated by an external demagnetizer.
Moving magnet and moving iron cartridges don't need demagnetization.
Not a good idea to use a demagnatizer on any cartridge in my opinion. If you feel compelled to 'clean' the coils in a cart, use the Cardas sweep LP, it is non-evasive and it works really well.Happy listening
cardas is a good decision , other is hold both rca plugs together , + to - , let a record run for 1 min. and listen again
Why would you want to?
