Just got an alert from Mosaic about new releases. What is and what is the quality of their "Q-LP's"?
Follow Ups:
Do you know if these are digital re-masters? Are all Mosaic's digital?
The Miles Davis/Gil Evans set used both analog and digital masters. I used to have that set and I don't recall that it declared which were which.By the way, I do have the complete Blackhawk set (extraordinary!) as well as the complete Silent Way set. The latter has some surface noise. I contacted Mosaic and they told me that this was a problem with RTI and affected the entire pressing. It was too expensive to redo. It's a really good set and the sound is good otherwise, but we forewarned. BTW, Mosaic offers a money-back on all their products, so if you get a set from Mosaic and are unhappy for any reason (including the music), they'll exchange it for something else or give you your money back.
The Mosaic note to customers lists three "running low" sets:The Complete Mercury Max Roach Plus Four Sessions (7 CDs) $112
No comment on sources.Miles Davis: The Complete 1963-1964 Columbia Recordings (10 Q-LPs) $180. Quote: 'In all, the Mosaic set includes 10 QLPs, our highest quality vinyl discs, featuring 46 cuts. All but "Miles In Berlin" were taken from their original analog sources. As always, the set includes our booklet featuring an extensive historical account and track-by-track analysis by Bob Blumenthal, a complete discography, and many rare photographs from the era.'
Miles Davis: The Complete In A Silent Way Sessions (5 Q-LPs) $90

of course, not that i care, but analog masters does not mean analog mastering.
.
I have at least one copy of all their LP sets. I've never had to return a set for defects.
AFAIK almost all sets have increased in value because of their limited pressings.I wish I had grabbed the 1960 Jazz Messengers set when I had the chance. "Witch Doctor" is the best Jazz Messengers album ever, and is hard to find on vinyl.
