i've seen this album at every record store for $1-$2.i was always intrigued because i LOVE Robin Trower's guitar rhythms. so chunky and funky! but always thought the cover was so cheesy, that the music might sound cheesy too. i mean it's picture of a damn sammich!.
stupid reasom, i know. but i usually steer clear of albums made in the 80's with 80's looking covers. especially by 70's Rockers. usually indicative of a downward spiral by then.
this is only if I'm not familiar with the album. if i know the songs, then i don't care what the cover looks like.
anyway, the BLT album made me break our the strat/fender concert/crybaby. i MUST learn Robin's rhythm. man's a damn genius. my wife and i went to see him at the Filmore (SF) earlier in the year. he looks like a British doctor now, but wow can he play!
Follow Ups:
Regrettably the album cover was a huge marketing mistake. By '81, you see a cover like this and you're inclined to think, OK these guys have lost it. I got past the stupid sandwich cover when I saw a mint copy at Salvation Army for .79c, and then I was really glad I didn't pass it up. Trower-Bruce. Two greats, and it takes someone the caliber of Jack Bruce to fill the position left by James Dewar.I wouldn't part with BLT, Bridge of Sighs, For Earth Below, or In City Dreams.
the mention of 'Bridge of Sighs' took me way back to my cassette days...which cassettes, unfortunately, I mostly pitched when the new 'superior' CD format arrived...I need to go find some Trower LP's to fill a gap in my collection...
Trower is indeed one of the better Hendrix followers in the Strat-tuned-down-a-semitone-on-a-big-Marshall-stack vein ;-) RT Live is my favourite RT LP.
"The torture never stops"
i wish i could play like that :-(Trower is an example of why vinyl is better ;-)
everything is so compressed with CD (why, i don't know - CD has a lot of headroom). his guitar work surrounds you on vinyl.
I just went out and picked up a copy on eBay.
don't get me wrong, it's good, but it's not the second coming or anything. bridge of sighs, twice removed from yesterday, long misty days, from earth below are better IMHO.but i have yet to find a non-thrashed copy of any of those albums.
I got a bit lucky on the weekend. Bought about 25 records from a guy for $40. 3 of them were Bridge of Sighs, Twice Removed and Long Misty Days, all in near mint condition. I've only cleaned and spun Twice Removed, and only a few songs on it at that. Still have about 16 or 17 of that lot to clean. The standout in the cleaned group so far has been "Steppin' Out" Eric Clapton featured with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (also with Champion Jack Dupree and Otis Spann). Mainly Bluesbreakers stuff from the first Bluesbreakers/Clapton record with 4 other cuts involving Dupree or Spann. Great performances and very really high quality sound as well-I'm really happy with this one and quite surprised at how good it sounds in light of it being a compilation.
Also cleaned a quad pressing of Santana's "Caravanserai" which has stunning sound quality-I've only spun part of it as well. A nice copy of Lou Reed's "Rock and Roll Animal" and Iggy Pop's "The Idiot", both of which I like as well.
AC/DC, a couple of King Crimson's, two more Santana's, EL&P's "Works", the soundtrack from Tommy and Clapton's"Backless" are among the others in the "to clean" pile.
unfortunately I dumped my LP back in the day and only have it on CD. I can hear that opening lick in my mind, fun stuff.
Awesome stuff. Just finished off "Bridge Of Sighs" about a half hour ago, too.
Was spinnin Victims of the Fury this weekend. Bridge or Sighs still my favorite. But, as I was spinning this was thinking, sure there's a couple of cheesy songs on the album, but man can this dude play. Always thought he didn't quiet get the headline credit he deserved. Would put him right up there with any rock guitarist. Hope he plays in the midwest soon. Would love to see him again.
always thought he should at least guest spot with one of the new retro garage bands like wolf mother, The Raconteurs, B.M.R.C, etc.the guy would shows these "kids" HOW IT'S DONE!
to your point, yeah i always thought that his awesome compositions were, at times, challenged due to the sometimes so-so lyrics. and james dewar was decent, but Robin needed his "Rod Stewart" like jeff beck did.
