I hear talk on here all the time about how mono cartridges outperform stereo ones on mono material. What about at the cutting stage? Are mono reissues made with a mono cutter or is it simply the same signal in both channels?
Follow Ups:
the classic blue notes are evidently cut with a mono cutter. not sure about others. i use a stereo cart and a have a mono switch on my pre that does the trick.
I think it's a crime to make a "full function" preamp without a mono switch or a stand alone phono stage without one.I have some really great stuff from the dim-dark past with "electronically re-channeld for stereo". First, they should have been shot for doing that, but if you don't have a mono swith (which my Anthem does not), you have to live with the crippled sound that "re-channeled" brings.
Or so I'm told...as I said, I don't have a mono switch so I don't really know if one is a good "band-aid" for fake stereo.
My next preamp WILL have a mono switch!

using the rat shack "double Y" cable. I suppose I'd pick any of the output leads from my SUT (L or R) and thrown in this cable.I am assuming this would be the cable to use.

Are mono switches good only for "correcting" those damned "electronically rechannelled for stereo" recordings, or are they useful in the case of mono records played back over a stereo system ? If so, how so? The times I heard the switch employed (usually w/ an Audible Illusions) the effect was negligible to my ears...
Thanks
a true mono switch but, simply, a "blend" switch - whatever THAT is.

I thought of buying one for that switch till I realized it did'nt do much for mono records. Like most Jazz fans, 7 of 10 records I play on any given day might be mono. A blend switch- I'm still confused, and still think my mono records sound great on my system as is. A mono cart would be ideal but I guess I am too lazy :-)
Thanks Much,

That's as good of a guess as anyone could make...TOO accurate! That is EXACTLY why I want a mono switch. I also play a lot of older Classical recordings and would like to hear them at their best.Yes, I could get a mono cartridge...if I was wealthy and could afford another arm. I'm far too lazy to switch cartridges back and forth on the same arm. A mono switch...a REAL mono switch would be wonderful!
I just played a Starker piece I ran across, thinking it would be great, and it was, but I realized after I'd cleaned it that it was one of those dastardly re-channeled LPs. Another time that a mono switch was needed.
Or we could get a time machine and go back and tell record execs that they have to sign a contract NOT to make re-channeled records. "I assure you, either your signature or your brains will be on this contract!"
I can live with monos being played as if they were stereo LPs. The eerie sound on some of those re-channeled LPs is reason to commit murder.

Nice mono switch right on the front. Cornet II at left.

And don't forget the midrange knob that was on Realistic receivers!Seriously, that looks awesome. Someone even knows that cartridges don't always have perfect channel balance. But a subsonic filter for wraped records would be nice. Yeah, I know you guys don't have any wraped records...
Indeed. As if adding echo and mis- shapen soundstages would fool anybody (like myself, as I somehow continue to wind up with these things)
Thanks
surprises that say "Electronically reprocessed---------etc." on the jacket but turn out to be true mono after all. I have several of these.

as it says it's a mono switch. I had noticed that neither of mine (the 3 and then the 3a) did much of anything and then I saw the explanation in a review somewhere. I, too, am still pleased with what I get playing monos on my stereo rig.

That phono section in its different incarnations is great, I still want one...

Mikee,Your anthem is a great amp..........be like me (hehehehe..not really)and get yourself a mono cartridge. God it's great to hear all those scuffed up, crapped out g or VG- slabs of vinyl turn into NM- beauties!
I only wish more models were available with conical shaped stylus. My Helikon is, but it's expensive.
for an extra arm. I promise I'll pay you back on the 7th Sunday of the 14th month...I'll meet you at 27 AM on the square in Central Park, Tuscalloosa, Maine.
