I am in the process of purchasing a new phono, the system is a ML nš.28 with MM module, ML Nš.23 power amd MG 3A panels, the turntable is a scheu premier with classic 12" arm and Denon dl 103 until I put a higher class cart. Here in Spain no dealer stocks any model, you have to purchase it to find out how good or bad it is!(I could not listen to any)
I have the choice of by order of preference
Ayre P5xe
Graham sleee Erea V reflex + elevator
ASR basic exclusive
Musical Fidelity KW
Which one would be better,

Another option would be a step-up transformer or head-amp.The ML No.28 is topnotch.
A programmable gain stage...?
After you menu=tioned the module...I remembered my dealer setting up an ML whilst we were drinking tea and chatting. The one that he had there, oldish unit, had a high and low gain stage and also had variable loading. He mentioned that some of the newer ones were all software driven and you just set it to what was required.Wonder if the manual is available online.
Better have a quick google ... would certainly save him a few pennies.
My Mark Levinson No.28 has an MC only phono stage. It does have variable loading and two phono gain settings, 58-dB and 64-dB, accessed by dip switches inside the enclosure.
But you are right John... they do high and low gain modules. So that would certainly be the cheapest way to go as you suggested. It would also cut out the aggrevation of another set of interconnects.
Knowing how good the ML stuff that I have heard is, I am sure that their module will be rather good. Will also save all that stress of making a 'blind buy' for a new stage that might upset your sound.
Enjoy.

Recently I have seen a few of the MF KW's on ebay for a considerable saving. I am not sure if this says anything about the unit itself, maybe not, but you could save some money watching that particular arena.
Personally I have the Ayre, its very good... especially when balanced in and out. It was also alot less that the MF new.
Both had got good reviews by Hi Fi Choice and awards as well, and the Graham Slee kit is also very well respected, I think they are also more flexible with settings etc.
But as for the ASR, I know nothing about it.
Thanks for your sugestions.
I thought of a n28 high gain module but this is very hard to find.
Maybe a stepup tranny
I'll think about it
thanks to all
