I want to thank you for the time you spent on reviewing opamps for the Bugle. Taking your recommendation I bought the 825 mini-board. It is hard to believe the change it made. That is a really good way to spend $40.Your description of the sound of this chip was just right. I highly recommend it to anyone using a Bugle.
After several hours of burn time we played the Brahms Double Concerto with Oistrakh/Fournier/Galliera. I've had this record for many years. It had great separation within the string section and delivered the starting rip of massed strings which was never presented before. The sound stage was slightly narrower but had much more depth. We're dancing and doing a lot more toe tapping. The conveyance of emotion is much stronger. My wife was moved by some pieces that she had listened to often without having that kind of reaction.
Once you get your Cornet and can experiment more with the Bugle try eliminating the y plugs you use and hardwire as much as you can to see what you think of that sound.
Follow Ups:
I have been interested in all the opamp rolling in the Bugle, but have been too busy to attmept any of it. The discussions have peaked my curiosity, and I think it's time to pull the trigger on this mod...thanks for all the great posts, you guys!
You want the middle one for the Bugle. The ground does not need a separate connection but orient the card with the ground towards the output.

See?
Go Muffin!
I think I saw one in the Hagerman forum on audio circle but I couldn't find it right now. Basically you want the ground pad to face towards the output connections. You don't need to make a separate connection to the ground pad.
Yeah, the detail is very nice, shimmering. It adds to the sweetness.I am going to add the Piccolo headamp board to the Bugle thusly adding flexibility and removing the extra connections. I am getting my Cambridge 540p back and will mod that with some AD825's and use that while I work on the Bugle. I am going to try the National NM4562's. If I like those better, they stay, and the Cambridge 540p will be 5x better and my brother-in-law will owe me big time. ;-)
But if the Nationals do not work out the 825's are so nice that I will give up opamp switching.
Have you listened to vocals yet?
I got your latest message via email but it does not appear here on the board. Just for comparison, I am running a passive with a switched attenuator. My amp has very low sensitivity, about 1.4V for full volume. The wiring from the Bugle to the switch is 23ga twisted pair copper in teflon (from Cat 5 plenum cable). The IC to the amp is Jon Risch's twisted pair coax cores.
I know you had made reference to an opamp recently in a post. Remember, i'm unemployed now and have to choose my purchases carefully, but have lots of time to copy my records to cd-r so this upgrade might be fun. I'm hoping to come home with some big winnings from Vegas next week, OR be even more broke.
The Burson discrete opamp did not work out. The AD825's are very good but I have two LM4562's coming in the mail and they are fare cheaper than the 825's. They might be better. I will let you know what they are like ....
I thought the 825 is only 40 bucks? Does that mean if the LM4562's are better, you'll sell me that 'ol beat up AD825? :-)
I would just ask for them. "Hey, I like that. Can I have it?" :-)I can't commit right now. Let's see how the thing goes and I will let you know. ... you got dibs, though.
Definitely a big improvement on the vocals. The separation of the backup singers on Paul Simon's Graceland, the tone on some old Linda Ronstadt songs, even the presentation on some of the songs on Boz Scaggs Silk Degrees was improved. Vocals are more prominent as well. The main improvement is on vocals and strings. I agree with your comments on bass, if you have Graceland give it a listen for the background vocals and the bass presentation.
I look forward to comparison with the Cornet.
