Go to Audiokarma.org and ask this same question in the "Turntablesa and Tape" forum. Plenty of folks there who'll help you find a decent vintage used table and cartridge for your $200 target price. To say you have to spend more to get in the game is ridiculous.

Here ya go. You'll need a cartridge. No relationship to seller, blah, blah, blah.

$187.50 Yes it did go for under $200. Still, now we need a cartridge and hope there is no issues. Noisy motor, grounding issues, poor cables, etc....Its likely that this is a very good table. Your recommendation of Thorens is right on. And even if there is a few minor issues my bet is that this good be a very good table even if it required some minor work.
I still think looking between $300 to $500 for an entry table is a good bet.
Much appreciate you returning here for that. You didn't have to:-)I'd like to believe that you can buy a TT on the cheap and it would be good enough to keep you interested in vinyl without breaking $200. I had a Sanyo TT back in the day with a cheap Shure cartridge (probably less than $100 total back then) that was good enough to convince me to keep my vinyl even after the TT was long gone. Had it not been for that table I'd probably not have a vinyl rig today.
Not surprised the Thorens went for that much. You're right they usually go for more. My point I suppose was that decent under $200 'tables with cartridges ARE out there, if you have a little patience and some luck.
you are the kind of guy that's not afraid to put in a little work tracking down a good buy. And, has a good eye for what your looking at. You're absolutely right there are some good deals out there if you're willing to look and be patient.
I got between 150 and 200 i think, can't remember. It had developed some type of tick sound from the motor and had a little play in the headshell regarding the azimuth, and I let the bidders know all this before hand. That turntable STILL had the nicest cueing mechanism I've ever used, bar none. It sounded good too.
The other active TD 166s are going for $350 and up. I figure once the serious bidding begins it will end between $150 and $170. Add $30 for shipping and your right at $200. Now for that new cartridge, another $90. And we're back at that $300 mark.I really don't think my opinion is ridiculous. I think its value rated and I still believe spending a bit more up front is worth it. FWIW some people making the effort to get back into vinyl give up if the experience doesn't meet expectations and miss out on the enjoyment of vinyl.
Still, just my opinion.
