The stupid thing is that I had actually seen your procedure posted here before. For some reason, I used to insist on trying this with the LP on the TT platter, and always failed.
Best thing for me - I am right-handed BTW - was to put the LP aside instead, on some other comfortable surface with a good bright lamp, then I could work on the "right side" of the disc instead of the left one (to avoid the tonearm). But I figure out also that this way, your needle "signature action" happens to be of approx. the same angle of attack than the stylus's (instead of coming from the opposite direction). I imagine this helps 'cause it worked straight away!
was '69 original mix/pressing, Grateful Dead, Aoxomoxoa. Had two skips from short scratches on side one. Plays fine now and was otherwise VG++.I'm right-handed, too. I place my vinyl on a non-slip mat at a work table with a bright light on my left side, peering through the linen tester placed south of the spindle and gently on the record over the scratch, and work with the straight pin at a shallow angle with my right hand. So, I'm coming at the scratch in the opposite direction as the stylus, except when I drag the pin backward a bit to retrace groove slightly. Anyway, it's a method that has been very effective for me, and I'm glad it worked for you.
