In Reply to: Sundazed LPs, What is the current quality like? posted by Solvang on April 30, 2007 at 14:18:18:
I own several Sundazed LPs. The vinyl is flat, quiet, cutting and mastering is excellent. None of the Sundazed LPs I have exhibit any sibilince or weird quirks.
However (there's always a however) when it comes to actual sound quality, I think they're at the mercy of the master tape they use. If the master was well-preserved, then the LP will sound just fine. If not, oh well.
I recently picked up the Stooges self-titled debut, Fun House, Back In the USA and High Time by the MC5. Other Sundazed albums I already had are the Monkees Headquarters, and the Fireballs Torquay and Gunshot!
I have an original copy of Headquarters for comparison and the Sundazed suffers. The pressing itself is much, much better and quieter than original Colgems, but the music is thin-sounding and lacks range.
I don't think the sonics on the MC5 albums are all that great either. Not bad, but nothing to write home about. I've never heard an original Atlantic of either, though.
The Stooges and the Fireballs albums are quite good. I saw a post in the VA Archive of a TAS list for best-sounding rock n roll albums and both Sundazed Stooges albums were on that list.
Again, the caveat--I've never heard an original pressing of either album, I'm simply judging them alongside other albums in my collection.
Here's something else to consider--a quick check of Ebay turned up a first-pressing Elektra copy of Fun House at $75 with several days left in the bidding. The Sundazed copy is $15 and it sounds quite good.
I like Sundazed and 4 Men With Beards. I won't hesistate to buy any of them if the original is rare enough to make it difficult to find and/or prohibitively expensive.
I just wish they'd issue those Dylan albums in stereo.

Follow Ups:
I got a really warped, but very clean, copy of Back in the USA for free a few weeks back. It was pressed in the UK on Atlantic in 1977. It is not very good in terms of sonics, but not terrible either. It is the only copy I've heard, but that makes two of us underwhelmed by the sound (but not the music).
I have early US pressings of both Back in the USA & High Time and neither is a sonic masterpiece. High Time is better IMO, a GP (George Piros) on both sides. Of course they both rock quite nicely but a bit thin sounding.
I had a crack at a pristine first pressing of Back in the USA a few years ago, but $150 was out of my league. I'll be looking to Sundazed when some money frees up.
the pressing is perfect, the sound is just a bit thin.
The music itself is not to be missed. "Teenage Lust," and "The American Ruse" are worth the $15 just by themselves.

I thought 4 Men with Beards was a Runt Distribution in house label. I know Rhino is owned by Warner.
I didn’t know Bob Irwin sold Sundazed. Are you sure?
All of my most recent Sundazed and 4 Men With Beards purchases have "Manufactured by Rhino" on the label.
I'm probably wrong about them being part of the Rhino Group--the Sundazed website says they do their own mastering--but Rhino is doing the pressing for all three labels.
