For a number of years now, me and two other buddies -- all of us jazz and vinyl fanatics -- have been getting together once a month or so to spin vinyl, drink wine, talk a little politics, and geek out over records. Sometimes we trade vinyl, especially if one of us has something another one really wants. At our last hang a couple of weeks ago, I traded this:for this:
It was a pretty big trade for me: I'm unlikely to ever see the Jimmy Woods record ever again (at least not a mint mono WLP), and it's a fantastic record (containing the first recording session for Andrew Hill). On the other hand, I've been lusting after the Cherry record, and it is a NY USA Blue Note.
So, it got me to thinking: Do a lot of folks here at VA have buddies who share their passion (in the real world, I mean, not only on VA)? Do you get together and spin? How often? And, do you ever trade records?
Just wondering out loud, really. I'm curious how many of us have friends in the vinyl world, or if some of us are, essentially, out there by themselves.
Follow Ups:
i give a lot of records away. In fact i owe Mosin some. I just gave a friend caetano veloso on phillips brazil and 20 other records including steve lacy plays monk, the first j gilberto, roy brooks on muse and and some ethiopian funk. but he is a very close friend. still, it was hard to part with the ones that weren't doubles.

A friend of mine has always been helpful to me with my system. He built and desinged, no in the order, my speakers. So when I am out and about and I and see something I know he 'd like I get it. Though he makes fun of my yard sale, penny oninchin' ways, he asked me to look out for Nonesuch titles. I doubt he will tease me a gain as I recently showed up at his house with 50 nonesuch records. All were in great shape. I'm glad to do it. Music is meant to be enjoyed.
although those early "hille" records are rare!how often did you listen to 'conflict'?
i'm one of those people who is "out there on my own". in all honesty, i tend not to mix too well with audiophiles -- but i love love love hanging with people who are into music. i do have one good friend who is local and a music fiend. always a great time when he is over. he doesn't really spin vinyl but loves picking through my collection & playing stuff.
I have a group of friends-usually 5 or 6 of us-who get together about one Saturday afternoon a month for a listening session, almost exclusively to jazz, but not limited to LPs, since there is a lot of stuff not available in that format. Actually some of the group don't, heaven forbid!, play vinyl anymore, but then our get-togethers are about music. There is no trading, but some borrowing is done on occasion. As to the trade, I have both and wouldn't part with either one. Compared to the Don Cherry the Jimmy Woods is pretty straightahead and for me has incredible value alone for Andrew Hill.
My "work wife"'s real husband is a vinyl geek; we've crossed paths a few times over the last year but never had them over for dinner. Eventually we will and it'll be all downhill from there.

So who wants to trade me a deep groove Blue Note for "Kia Hiwa Ra! A Maori Cultural Performance recorded live at Tudor Towers", Rotorua on Kiwi/Pacific Records...anyone?How many Maori records is a guy gonna find in his life? Of course, then there's "The Te Arohanui Maori Company of New Zealand" recorded at the Hollywood Bowl Church of the Ltter Day Saints records, PCC 101
Hell, I'll trade both for a pristine Lee Morgan. Great deal, eh?
(Where do I get these things?)

If I had more money I'd soon be broke...but I'd have more LPs!
My oldest friend.... known him since I was probably 5.
We both run vinyl rigs and regularly listen in on each others setups etc. At the moment he is trialing a spare rack of mine.
We sort of trade vinyl... but it normally is just a long term swap. If I want to hear a record on my system then its mine for as long as I like.... works well for us. Basic rules apply... if you trash it, you buy it..or find a replacement. Its all fun,
