Available today on CD--or look for the Impulse! reissue from the early 1970's Or, if your flush you can scare up an original Saturn pressing. Sad to say, however--the CD might be the best sounding version and you know it KILLS me to say it.This is Chicago-era Arkestra and my favorite LP from that era--Gilmore, Allen, Boykins, Patrick. Dotson--they're all there and blowing like MAD. The arrangements are tight, the compositions are swinging, complex and just on the verge of going "out." "Saturn" is a freaking monster cut--one of my favorite jazz performances ever.
Follow Ups:
there is an even earlier press of this, with a different cover, allegedly pressed in less than 50 or even 20 copies, which is also the very first Saturn lp, it's an abstract silkscreen, record has the gold Saturn label with red print. The cover Jack has posted came out years later. If someone can host it I'll send pics, it is far and away the rarest Saturn.
I saw a pic once. My copy is gold/red deep groove too, but with the cover picture here. It's one of the best sounding Saturns I own, which isn't saying all that much as you know . . .
sounds like a great place to start and a classic performance. i appreciate your recommendation.
