HI All,
About two years ago I picked up a used 5 record set. Never got around to listening to them until recently. The handsome maroon box looked worn and used but sill in tact.The set was "Simon and Garfunkel; Collected Works" on ordinary Columbia red labels. Nothing to excite jumping and shouting. All for $12.00 at a used record store. Inside I found the following:
* Record 1: Wednesday Morning, 3AM
* Record 2: Sounds of Silence
* Record 3: Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme
* Record 4: Bookends
* Record 5: Bridge Over Troubled WaterAll of these will be familiar to S&G fans. Like, for example, my ex-wife who got our S&G collection.
And what did I find inside? Well, just some of the best Columbia I have ever heard. I'm not a Columbia fan but these recordings are sonically first class and the pressings far above Coumbia's average - first class for sure - almost perfect. I wish all Columbia's were this good. If they were I might change my mind.
But there's more. I don't think the set has ever been played. Not a scratch or blemish in sight. Even carefully handled records usually show some signs of use. Not these. They were still in their original paper sleeves and the vinyl did not even have the typical very fine paper scratches from being slid in and out of the sleeves. Of course, they are now in good plastic sleeves after they were washed, Lasted and auditioned.
So, if you all ever run into this set take a second look. The Columbia number is C5X 37587. The set is dated 1981. Wonderful stuff.
Follow Ups:
I'm not sure why - maybe the sheer number of albums in a boxed set overwhelmed the original owners - but my experience has alwasy been that most boxed sets have either never or barely been played.
Always on the lookout for boxed sets.
Jeff
