In Reply to: AFAIK, there are only a few MM that cost more than my 20XL posted by artemus on April 28, 2007 at 17:27:47:
you have an MM stage, right? the investment, then, is only the cost of the MM cartridge. could be worth a try just to satisfy your curiosity. if you are constrained on the MC end (i.e., not going higher than a 20XL or the SUT+MM stage you have/use), then there's only an upside. if performance is "worse", then you simply stick with the MC/SUT/MM stage.i think the 20XL is a good cartridge; i am open to thinking that a well-implemented MM might be competitive) or better than it. when i compared the 20XL to a flagship MC cartridge+solid SUT+MM stage, i did find it lacking.
i'd still be open to hearing a top-notch MM cartridge, but at this stage it would surprise me if the performance could be better than a top-end LOMC+top step-up+top MM stage.
Follow Ups:
There has been an MM-compatible line of cartridges that has been available since the '70's that offers benchmark cartridge perfomance.Few people know just how good these cartridges are, and I will bet that you have never given them serious consideration.
What are these benchmark cartridges you ask?...
None other than the B&O MMC-1/2/20CL. It just so happens that Sound-Smith still manufactures them.
Ofcourse, you will need the adaptor to use it with a standard headshell which they may or may not still provide, but can regularly be found on eBay.
You will need to keep in mind that the adaptors for the 2 series ARE different.
can you kindly tell me what other LOMCs & SUTs you have used, for reference?
I currently can't think of very many cartridges that I haven't heard or used. This includes nearly all of the "legendary" models made in the last 30 years. My list of top cartridges is short. It includes the Accuphase AC series, the Air Tight PC-1, the Koetsu Onix Signature, the signature offerings from Kiseki, the Shelter 90x and the venerable B&O MMC-1/2/20CL.
did you use SUTs or active MC stages with the LOMCs you used?thanks for the point(s) of reference. i appreicate it!
i'm curious if you've heard the 'allaerts' and/or 'magic diamond'.
I have used both active MC stages (Accuphase primarily) as well as step-up's. The allaerts is an interesting cartridge line that I would like to spend some time with. I have yet to hear one.I am just now hearing about the Magic Diamonds special stylii profile. Interesting indeed.
...[magic diamond] quite a bit. although i have heard other several other "flagship" (MC) cartridges, i have not lived with them in my system, so i do not have the depth of knowledge that you clearly have.thanks for the info on the B&O MM. based on your experience, it certainly bears consideration down the road (although at this point i am so satisfied that i have no desire to look anywhere else).
