I was first introduced to punk by The Ramones. Got all the Thunders, Johansson and even Sylvain solo recs. in the seventies. This led to The Dolls, Iggy and the Stoogies, MC5 and others. One of those "backwards progressions".The music I missed out on, some of it from that same time period, was country rock. Also ignored earlier country music. I only started listening to Joe Ely, Billy Joe Shavers, Merle and Buck about 5 years ago. Would have been quite a contrast to have followed "Old Five and Dimers" with L.A.M.F.
Gotta get a 4MWB's reissue of 'Marquee Moon'. My roommate had it back in the day and I never got my own copy.
Follow Ups:
The first two Joe Ely recs are essentials. Buck Owens--look for Sings Harlan Howard , probably his best LP.
Haggard--I like a lot of individual songs more than any one album, but Mama Tried is probably THE one Haggard album to have.
And if you haven't checked out Gram Parsons yet, well, don't wait.
I was into country and country-rock back in the day.

Agreed on the first 2 Ely LP's. I've got "Griesous Angel" and GP by Parsons. You steered me to Bucks Harlan Howard LP some time back. Great rec, by the way, unfortunately my copy is pretty rough.I've got about 15 Haggard LP's and agree that "Mama Tried" is one of his best. His LP's are inconsistent, but he has written some great songs.
They seem to go together so well. My old band used to play Ramones-esque punk covers of old Hank, Merle, and johnny cash songs. Also marty robbins, george hamilton et al.When Hank III came to town, his show was full of punks. Weird but cool. Certainly "Mama Tried" as well as most other Haggard songs have the exact same chord progressions as punk.
