I am a vinyl newbie and just purchased a Linn LP-12 with Ittok LVII arm with a Monster Cable Genesis 2000 cartridge. I have to turn my tracking force dial to .5 to get the arm to balance and float freely. Shouldn't the setting be at zero? Would I turn the counter balance one way or the other also?
Follow Ups:
1. Is as described this supplies all of the VTF with a dynamic downforce supplied by the spring.2. Is to set part of the VTF with the counterweight, I use it for about half of the VTF and then set the remaining VTF with the spring.
subtly different sonic presentations are to be had with each style.
Go to the link provided and download the Ittok manual, which explains setup etc.Jeff
Early Ittoks had a two piece counterweight. This is apparent when viewing the counterweight which will have a right angle notch taken out of one end. Later Ittoks had a one piece counterweight, and looks, well, like a simple cylinder with a bevel on both ends. You're supposed to set the VTF dial to zero and then move the counterweight back and forth on the arm stub till it zeroes out and then set the tracking force. If you have the counterweight at the end of the stub and you still need to set the VTF dial at .5, then the clock style mainspring is either defective, or the dial indicator knob has moved (it is simply glued on, but with a pretty good glue!).
Hope this helps,
Stu
I have the counterweight almost touching the tracking force mechanism and it still takes moving the tracking force to .5 to get the arm to level or float. I have a Monster Cable Genesis 2000 cartridge mounted. Is this cartridge too light for the arm to zero out or is there something wrong with the arm? Is it a costly thing to fix? Am I degrading the sound by ignoring this misread and going with an external tracking force tool exclusively to set the tracking force?
