I found a verve early pressing of Lester Young Swings. It didn't look too beat up, I cleaned it thoroughly but the grooves were clearly damaged. Not just groove noise but marked distortion of the sound. I could still tell it was him, This was to be my first Lester Young LP. At least the cover is in good shape. Oh, well, the quest goes on. I have an old London PS 139, blueback--the Sousa Marches record with Grenadier Guards of London which is the record I played as a child of age 9 or so. It still plays but is worn off and scuffed. I got a new one on ebay for cheap but wound up dropping it and scratching one band :((
I am not speaking about scratches. Pops and ticks can occur on absolutely pristine appearing records and the whole side might play on somewhat scratched ones.
the surface is dull or gray and the number of scratches are almost too numerous to count. Usually that is a give away for heavy wear. This LP didn't appear that way, yet the higher frequencies were distorted almost with a buzzing sound and the lower ranges were muffled and I played other discs afterwards just to make sure nothing had changed with the TT/cartridge and it was clearly the LP. Too bad since I think Lester Young was incredible. Norm
agree, just doing more research.Example was my thrift store buy of about 10 records a few months ago. They appeared to be all from the same source, 8 were vocal music and 2 symphonic. One of the latter was DGG Mendelssohn Symph. 4/5 by BPO/Karajan, German pressing. I think they were adequate to good sound, very good performances. They played fairly quietly, but on peaks, one could tell, especially at the end of the rather long sides, that there was distortion and/or mistracking. I took off the disc, washed again, cleaned with nylon brush, cleaned stylus and still bad.
So I went back to another LP worrying about my cartridge and heard no problems. My conclusion, this was groove wear from the previous owner's mistracking inner grooves.

hello,lester young was a giant.... easily, the most elegant sax player of all. try to get everything he did... good place to is start with his count basie and his collaborations with billie holliday -- you can hear billie holliday not wanting to start her rephrains -- she also wanted to hear what lester young would do!

With vinyl it can be a matter of degrees, too.I've bought LP's that I initially thought were good only to discover more minor issues later, like minor inner groove damage or a little bit of mistracking static on peaks. Usually, I add those LP's back to the shopping list.
I hate what you're describing, though: the good looking LP that's been played out (more likely chiseled out by someone's crappy equipment). Oh well, every LP has a story. :)
