I can't believe someone actually bought this Classic Records reissue believing it is an original! No where does the auction state there is RVG or the "ear" in the deadwax (which is proof of an original) and any legit seller would have this info in BOLD. It's clearly the Classic Records reissue by the type of shrinkwrap and the cover texture. I guess they did their reissue a little too well!
Follow Ups:
I saw the photo - the DG is evident. But I haven't seen the Classic reissues of the 1500 series. Do they also have the deep groove in the label?

what did the seller think when the Classic Records response card fell out of the jacket when he opened it?
The seller is emphatic that it is not a reissue. So if it does prove to be a reissue, then it is definately "not as described".Seller will accept PayPal if the buyer is willing pay the associated fees.
If it were me (and it is not), I would pay by PayPal and demand immediate proof of shipment. Then report the item to PayPal as not as described causing PayPal to freeze the transfer of funds until the matter is resolved by the participating parties. After delivery, I would have the opportunity to confirm if it is a true mint 1st pressing. If so, funds will be released. If not, funds will be returned to me. In essence, PayPal will be an escrow service for this transaction.
Best,
paypal doesn't really seem to work that way. the funds will go to the seller immediately, and a paypal investigation will take > = 30 days. one's only recourse will be to get their CC company to reverse the transaction, in which case paypal will freeze the funds. for this amount, though, one would have to prove the fraud.the seller is careful to say that he believes it is original or that OTHERS have told him it is an original...but his language is clear to avoid saying anything untrue. i would be wary.
one must wonder what he thought when the Classic Records "Win a Free Classic Records Test Pressing" card fell out. Also, since he says he was the buyer of the LP at some point, one must wonder how much HE paid. doesn't he think it's fishy that he paid $30 and is now selling for $4,500? well, he later contradicts himself by saying he is selling for someone else later in the listing.
Is a licensing disclaimer for Blue Note records. Notice how the seller's photo conveniently eliminates this. No inner sleeve was shown either. No dead wax info. This was a snow job.
Did it in fact have:"..Side one has: Blue Note Records 47 West 63rd-NYC and Side two has: Blue Note Records 47 West 63rd- New York 23"?
That is just the sort of thing Mike H might do, but can someone who owns the reissue confirm?
It's a very accurate reissue and is well worth $30.
...an original as well?i'm just wondering about the term 'accurate'.
i think the classic monos are quite good, and i do hear differences compared to the originals i have...but i don't have an original of 1568 to compare it to.
But purely as an object. I do hear a difference with the original Blue Notes compared to the Classic isssues, most fair pretty well but some are quite off the mark IMHO (Somethin' Else for example). If an original 1568 came my way I think I'd have to put it on the auction block no matter how much I dig it!
...on the accuracy of the reproductions.i do think they still are sonically enjoyable, particularly when some of the music is just downright unobtainable/unattainable in the original format.
the only version i have is the classic records mono (which sounds pretty good, all things considered), as i've never been willing or able to pay for an original (too late!).this is a well-documented quirk of the original record, and classic did their homework on it.
It does look like a reissue - I see the shrinkwrap with the perforation 3/8'' from the edge typical of Classic Records.

i had to send the buyer a "warning" email via ebay -- simply to be careful and what would lead *me* to believe this was a reissue, as well as why I think the seller will claim it was "as described" and refuse to issue a refund.looks like the buyer is from japan; there could be a language barrier.
at some level, people are "on their own" (buyer beware), but there's no excuse for deliberately misleading someone.
Good act of citizenship... Meanwhile, I'll let my mono "47 West 63rd NYC" (with no R on it)copy of Lou Donaldson's Blues Walk go for $3000, just to be generous. Seems like a fair price, as I paid all of $12 for it two months back. Of course it does have RE-1 scratched in the run-out on side 1, which I believe means "really the first edition".(grin)
You know, with these prices, people are going to be forging copies (if they are not already). My forged copy of the Beatles on Veejay is worth a few bucks as a forgery, apparently. Sounds awful, but an interesting curiosity.
...that posting about what a crime/travesty it is without attempting to send a note to the buyer is, well, unfortunate.in about 10 years, it will be MUCH harder for people to tell the classic reissues from the originals, even if sellers are earnest.
i do favor some markings on a reissue to (easily) signify the origin. it really doesn't detract from the look of the album at all, and it will thwart unscrupulous sellers from profiting off of the naivete of others.
Bernie Grundman scratches BG into the dead wax, there is no ear and there is a "Courtesy of Blue Note Records" notice on the back of the sleeve.
...but they are getting less obvious, so more novices will get duped into paying big $$ for something that is not as advertised.a simple "classic records" in very small font on the cover & label really doesn't diminish the quality of the production (witness some japanese/king issues) and makes it OBVIOUS to all what they are dealing with.
searching in the deadwax is easy for someone like us/someone on here to do, but it is not obvious to all.
it is hard to capture deadwax info in a digital photograph, too.
I tried to send a message to the buyer through eBay but was denied by their security system because I "had no open transactions with this member".
i was able to click on the buyer's feedback, then click 'contact member' on the left.
The seller does seem to be open and fair:
Seller has instructed me to add that he will give the buyer 7 days (from receipt of delivery) to inspect this record and/or have it inspected. He isn't a professional collector and wants the buyer to know that this record can be returned (Buyer to pay shipping & handling fees) if the record is found to be other than described. Please note that the seller is unavailable due to an illness and I don't know much about this Ebay stuff in general, so I'm not going to be much help either. Hopefully this return policy will ease some minds.
...he is clear to say "if the record is found to be other than described."i think one will NOT find the record to be "other than described", but one will find that the record is not original.
also, to say he has "little experience with ebay" (but at least 45 transactions) is a red flag. he very clearly wants a payment method with limited/no refundability (cashier's check).
believing that people won't take $4.5k and run.Checking the bid history of the seller, I only see sub $100 items sold. This is the first big ticket item. Not very reassuring.

i like this paragraph from an email he allegedly received:"Dear Seller -- Based on the close up photos, it's quite obvious that you're listing an ORIGINAL DOUBLE SIDED DEEP GROOVED version of this LP, so don't let potential bidders fool you, in giving it away, off listing, for pennies. In fact, you do have a PRECIOUS GEM, and it certainly will fetch for over ***** on eBay. About two weeks ago, a similar LP, that's in NEAR MINT codition, as well as a great jacket, without the registration R, on labels, has been sold, here on eBay, for over *****. Yours seem to be even better, considering you only opened it up, just for verification. Also, keep in mind that ONLY about 500 of those, double sided deep grooved, with the New York 23 addresses, on sides TWO, were pressed on the FIRST PRESSING RUN, and they're even more sought after. The others were later pressed, and they do NOT have the New York 23 addresses on sides Two. I'm definitely watching your auctioin, just to see how much it will go for. I wish to remain anonymous. Good luck!"
he also says that he is selling it for someone else, in addition to saying "The place I bought it from said Original."
good luck getting your money back after paying with cashier's check..."if the record is found to be other than described."
