In our area we get a lot of ridiculously priced ads for audio equipment. For example:
>SME 30/2 TURNTABLE - $2800 (dublin / pleasanton / livermore)
or
>McIntosh MC2000 - $1600
In other words, ads for very desirable audio equipment at a fraction of their value.
When you reply, just for kicks, they never get back to you.
Is this the equivalent of kids ringing the doorbell and running away? Or is there some other kind of scam, for example collecting emails for spamming purposes?
Follow Ups:
I met someone once who used to list one or another of the pieces of his gear just to see how many responses he would get. He had no intention of selling them at the time. He said he just wanted to make sure they still retained their value. Talk about insecurity. I didn't say anything to him, but really wanted to inject my foot deeply into his hindquarters. This may be a similar case.
Want listings? For example, I'd LOVE an SME 30/2 table in excellent condition for $2800. Let me know if you know of anyone selling one for that price. Also looking for a Koetsu Coral cartridge for $500.

Hi Henry,What's a scam for then? They never reply. I would understand if they replied with something like:
"Come by with $2600 cash at xxxx" or "Send me a money order and I'll ship it to you".
But if you never hear from them, the only conclusion I can draw is that they are collecting email addresses.
BTW I recommend always using a special email account for places like craigslist.
I agree on the e-mail addy. I have one I always use for deals like that since I can set it to reject any e-mail from all but my address book entries.

Easier to scam. They likely not located in the area they claim, and have no interest in communicating with anyone capable of direct, local follow-up.
Email them from Japan and I'll bet they answer. ;-)
