.. for those that are using a SUT. I like it at 200 to 300 ohms thru an active stage, but have no idea how low it could go thru an SUT and Cornet2. Benz recommends rather high figures for loading, so I dont think they form much of a basis to go on.Thanks for any experiences put there....
Follow Ups:
I have mine loaded at 214 ohms or so through the Cinemags. I have a Monster y-connector plugged into the input of the preamp. In one of the y-connector inputs I have male RCA's w/ 27400 ohm resistors soldered in for an equivalent impedance of 17309 ohms. The other y input has the output from the Cinemags. With the 47kOhms of the phono input and the impedance of the transformer this gives a load to the cartridge of around 214 ohms which I find is perfect. It is easy to experiment also. Just make up some different loading RCA's w/ different value resistors and swap them.
I use a quick Excel sheet to calculate the values.
Hello Risabert-I have a question I hope you can answer. I have a Denon DL 102 with a recommended load of 1K ohms or more, according to the literature that came with the cart. Its output is 3.0 mv, so I am putting it in directly to my Hagerman Cornet, with the standard 47K ohms. What value resistors would I use in your type of "Y" connector set-up to arrive at 1K ohms? What effect might this lower value have on the sound?
I appreciate your help.
a 1k resistor in parallel with 47k gives an impedance of about 976 ohms. The formula is 1/ (1/47000 + 1/x where x is the value of the resistor).
A 1050 ohm resistor will give a load of 1024 ohms or so.Generally, loading a MC lowers its output and damps its high frequency peak. How that translates into sound is really system dependent.
I made a set of these and used them with my DL-160 going into the Bugle @ 47k.What it did for the 160 was make the detail tighten up a wee bit. Nothing drasticbut discernable. Didn't want to go back to 47k after hearing that but to, say 150, was dull.
I just experimented with a 4.7K loading resistor on the secondary, giving 52 ohms cart load (I'm using the 9:1 ratio wiring scheme) and I thought it sounded pretty darn good. Perhaps still just a tad bright even, and I'm running my cart just a whisker tail down. I'm going to try a 3.3k resostor next...giving a loading of 38 ohms.I am honestly surprised the cart is going this low. Bass still seems to be pretty tight. I am going to ultimately use a double pull 6 position rotary selector knob for added versatility. I was thinking of having 38, 52, 69, 100, 150, and 200 ohms as my choices.
Did YOU try loading below the 200 ohm mark? What did you hear?
I was down to 100 ohms with the MC stage in my pre-amp but the Cinemag @ 9:1 and 214 ohms into the MM stage whipped its a&% so I left it. I do have other resistors to try I just haven't done so yet.
Yeah... 200 to 300 is all the lower I could go into an active MC pre. You might try going lower thru your SUT/MM set-up. I'm going to try as low as 38 ohms. (3.3k loading resistor)
