Just wanted to share a very pleasant experience I've had with The Turntable Factory. Joel is definitely one of the good guys in the business.....he truly cares about classic old-fashioned customer care and has a genuine love for vintage turntables, regardless of whether or not he's making any money.I won an Empire 698 on ebay and Joel walked me and the seller through the shipping/packing process every step of the way. He went OUT OF HIS WAY to help me on the phone and via email. The Empire is now sitting in my living room, totally intact and survived the shipping process thanks to Joel's consultation. I called Joel and he sat right there and helped me unbox and assemble the unit over the phone. He also told me that he would be happy to help me should I require any additional support.
Let me just say that I haven't actually paid him to do any work for me. He's providing all of this service just for the sake of it...for the love of hi-fi. This, I think, is insanely rare in an age where most audio salespeople and repair personnel seem to not be able to wait to get you off the phone or out of their hair fast enough. The kicker was when I told Joel I wanted to send him the table to go over it and he said that if it seemed like it was working, don't even bother....that there isn't much he would really need to do to it. He could have easily made money here and he turned it down because he is intelligent, honest, and has integrity.
Follow Ups:
had dealings with Joel on several Dual matters as well as a couple of purchases. Wonderful person to deal with and he went out of his way set me up with a great place for Dual parts in Toronto... Way to go Joel...

I third the story. Joel rebuilt my Dual 1219 in January 2004. More than 2 years later, a plastic piece that controls the arm cycling mechanism broke. I took it back to him, he took it apart, diagnosed the problem, informed me there were no replacement parts available, and proceded use his dremel tool to modify a similar part from a 1245 so that it would work on my table. Then told me he wasn't going to charge me because he had previously rebuilt it, and considered this "warranty work". I insisted on paying him, and I think he ended up accepting $35 for the work.
Truly a good guy, and definitely has some serious health issues. To the extent he can do work for you, he's a great resource. Good to know he's still getting on.
...is indeed terrific. He worked on a tonearm for me a few years ago. Don't remember what he charged, but it was less than I paid to ship it.I read that he had some pretty serious health problems. I hope he is okay.
Joel, if you're reading this, we appeciate you very much.
Best wishes.
I have done business a few times with Joel (and also many other audio service guys) and I can certainly saw that this guy really is about the best there is out there. Highly recommended repair person!
that's an awesome story -- thanks for sharing it. it is really cool when we find people in the world like this.in some ways it is sad that we are so shocked by what should be basic human kindness. (i recognize this gentleman went above and beyond and has a business to run.)
sounds like a great guy, and i hope that youre new-to-you turntable gives you much satisfaction.
