In Reply to: Yep - but you gotta wonder why his P5 didn't kill his CDP? posted by Don T on April 24, 2007 at 09:03:25:
My CD player sounds better than my SOTA. Should I buy a Technics SL-1200? I just don't know what to do.
Follow Ups:
Just foolin with you John....However this point is dear to my heart. I would sell any turntable in a minute that could not eclipse the sound quality of CD playback. In fact I have sold a handful that never could get to that sound level.
I am just wondering why anyone who loves music as you do would be willing to accept substandard performance.
I have not had a system in my listening room where LP didn't outperform CD playback quality for over 25 years!
really has work to do on their system. Most new vinyl, not all, is done as an afterthought. Though overall I think the quality of vinyl releases has improved through the digital age the quality of digital releases has improved as well.
I get great sound out of my affordable $299 NAD CDP. Quality that I've never heard from an under $1000 (deck, arm, phonopre) analog front end.
At this late stage though, whether one prefers the best of what TTs or the best of what CDPs have to offer is somewhat a moot point. The quality and manufacturer of the recording media is ultimately in most cases the deciding factor.
It is what it is, flawed, decent or perfect. Enjoy whatever media you prefer and leave it at that. Enjoy the performance, take notes and go to the next recording. In my experience, enjoying the music is more important than the media it is recorded to.
BTW just to clear up your confusion. My response is not related to the topic of analog v. digital. My preference is for the recording on the media that is manufactured the best which is somewhat clarified below and many other places on the AA forums. I have no built in bias or preference.
My response to T&T is based on listening experiences. The P3 properly setup with a decent cartridge, phono section and isolation should sound better than the older Rega CDPs. I'm have to assume the P5 sounds better than the P3 or T&T wouldn't have bought it. No I have not compared the P3 with the new version of Rega CDPs which supposedly are much improved and until I do I will not comment on whether they sound better or worse than a P3.
The fact that you think the Sota TT is the best sounding TT you've ever heard is statement of your preferences on what you consider good sound. The fact that I disagree and don't like the sound of the Sota TT has nothing to do with digital - though I do prefer the sound of a decent CDP to the sound of a Sota TT. There are plenty of other TTs around that I prefer to the Rega P3 that I prefer to any Sota model I have ever heard. This is a statement of my preferences for what I consider good sound.
Please refrain from pigeon holing the conversation into one of analog v. digital - you might be viewed as being as confused as the original poster.
nice!
Give me rhythm or give me death!
I was about to purchase a new cartridge for the P5 when I saw a deal on Audiogon I couldnt pass up. $2000 for the Spacedeck table, Lyra cartridge and an added VPI 16.5 $2000 for ALL 1 mile from my home.If sell my P5, VPI 16.5, upgraded TT PSU and Rega phonostage for $1500 or so, than my total cost to try this new table is $500.
LISTEN!!!!> > > > > > > > > > > > > $500 to try a new table and a $2000 cartridge.
Now if I bought a cartridge or a new tone arm, it would probably have cost me more.
How in the hell could I pass this up? You always make assumptions that are way off.
I took your post as...."HAHAHAHAHHAHA what an idiot. He payed a fortune a new turntable and only had a damaged cartridge""""" hahahahaha.. You are WAY OFF.
Nope. $500. (AND ONE HELL OF A KILLER DEAL). Also, I was trying to be polite when I said the cartridge may have been damaged. There is nothing wrong with it. I didnt have the heart to say what I truly feel--that the Rega P5 can only go so far. (Even my Rega dealer is not crazy about the table.)
One last thing. I tried a Benz with the Rega for a few days and had to ship it back. I HAD ALREADY GONE THROUGH SOME TROUBLE OF WORKING ON THE REGA.
Dam, PLEASE read peoples posts in full before adding you comments. You do this to me and others all the time. Get your facts straight.
Ok fine you got a good deal on your new turntable - awesome and lucky you. But that's not what I was commenting on - I was commenting on the comments made in your original post.I didn't make any assumptions at all. I didn't knock your gear and think it's all good stuff.
But alas, and as usually you've managed to call me a whole bunch of names as you dodged and ignored my original points as if you were injured pigeon or something.
This is an audiophile website and I reserve the right to respond as an audiophile on audiophile topics. You one the other hand might want to consider posting your stuff over on Inmate Central they'll treat you nice over there.
****LOL! Buy a $40K+ TT then check to make sure your cartridge isn't broken!****(
Let's start with your reply to my post. You see how you jump to conclusions? Are you helping me or starting trouble? Forget my original post for a second and please spend some time thinking about the purpose for this exact statement. Did you really mean this or were you simply not reading my posts?****LOL! Buy a $40K+ TT then check to make sure your cartridge isn't broken!****
Please repeat these words....I'm sorry T&T, you are right. You did not spend $40K+ TT to make sure your cartridge is broken. I was wrong.
For $500 or less,(less than the cost of a cartridge) I was able to continue my audio adventuring using a different table and cartridge. Many said it might be my table or the cartridge that was the problem. Well here is one quick way to get an answer--replace both for LITTLE $$$. I'm sure if you had been in my shoes, you would have done the exact same thing.. I thought the results would be interesting to others here on this board....(I gut lucky and the timing was perfect)
And to jerk your chain a bit, THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A REGA P5/Linn ADIKT vs. SPACEDECK /LYRA IS HUGE. I really didn't think it would make such a difference BUT IT HAS--Believe it or not. I've actually sat and listened to this change have you? Can you really make a comment without actually hearing? (Well you normally do, but let's see.)
If you use a Rega, I highly recommend you take home a spacedeck to hear how your system can really open up. Then post back and let us know what you think............(your system, your home, going from Linn Adikt MM to Lyra MC)
Here is a picture you missed...My Rega with a new cartridge a few weeks ago..I really tried. I would have continued, but table deal came before I bought another cartridge.
