From searching the archives I think I understand perfectly the meaning...
But is that a wordplay on the mining or geology term "mother lode" ?
Follow Ups:
so I guess motherload has been used, by myself included, erroneously or as a wordplay or non-standard variant.
the correct spelling is "mother lode", indeed, as in mining, referring to a rich deposit of ore or other desireable substance, such as coal. I.e. the main deposit, (the "mother") versus smaller less substantial (and less valuable) tributaries..My $.02,
Cheers,
It's "Mother Lode"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother_Lode

in metals mining, when not referring to the specific Mother Lode of California.
