I use an Allaerts MC-1B (and may eventually upgrade to a Formula). When I was starting to consider the Reference, I e-mailed Frank Schroeder, who told me how fond he was of the Allaerts (like his arms, totally hand made in tiny quantities), and recommended the wand material that would perform the best with the cartridge. Frank really is the best source for advice...
Ask Frank Schroeder. I would say he is a bit more knowledgeable than anyone here.
I have a Schroeder Reference with the 9" 12 gram arm and have used it with three of my cartridges: ZYX UNIverse X-SB, Van den Hul Colibri XPW, and VdH Condor XGM. All three cartridges sound very nice on the Reference. I did not find the UNIverse to be at all dry sounding, but then I have an all tube system. I would say that the Reference is more synergistic with the Colibri than with the UNIverse, but that would not stop me from using a UNIverse. Both cartridges have their strengths and weaknesses. The Condor is sort of midway between the two.The next time I mount the UNIverse on the Reference I will use the heavier brass headshell instead of the lighter aluminum headshell. Some people have said the UNIverse SB sounds better on Schroeder arms with effective mass of up to 18 grams. It is definitely worth experimenting.
Good luck in your search for a cartridge. You will love the Reference. It is a breeze to set up. Cartridge alignment was never so easy. Waiting two years for a Reference is worth it.
I dont know if your suffering in the queue like I am but I was contemplating an zyx catridge possibly a universe but was informed "I have spoken to several colleagues who say its not a very good match with the Schröder tonearm", something about a dry sound balance, I did not consider this to be an issue with this arm It would be interesting to hear from Schröder owners about there experiences with different catridges (and cartridges of deferent prices for easy listening, melody, jazz, pop etc)
The Schroeder Reference is available with a wide variety of arm materials, lengths and effective mass so there is no way to generalize.
If you're ordering a new one you can get it (eventually) optimized for whatever cartridge you intend to use.
