Life, Hi-Fi & Happiness.
If there is one thing I am learning about as I get older then it is ‘Life Balance’.
At 32 years old I still have plenty to learn, achieve and experience. Now happily married to a great lady and with a wonderful six month old son and a mortgage, we have so far overcome those challenges that life has thrown at us, the most important of all is finding the time, money and space for decent Hi-Fi!
When single and carefree I could happily spend hours tinkering and spending silly amounts of money on bits of wire, cartridges, tone arms and the like, with no real thought for anything other than my own personal goal of audio perfection ( what ever that is ).
Now times are different, I have my family to think about and our ( very close ) neighbours……wires just aren’t worth so much now……
I have been through all manner of hifi components, from one fancy to the next, but never in my life have I been more happy than with my current slightly odd system.
I love all sorts of music on vinyl, from the best of what the ‘ Now’ albums have to offer, to Jazz, Classical, Rock and Blues and I have to say that my current system plays all these records more enjoyably and consistently than ever before.
Sure, your all waiting to discover my secret, why I don’t spend lunchtime trawling ebay, hifi shops and classifieds for the next ‘I promise myself this is the last’ upgrade?
Well here it is, you may get disappointed at it not being interesting, expensive and full of cottage industry components……but it works for me/us, your mileage my vary......
Technics SL1210mk2 with a shielded mains cable, KAB silicon fluid arm damper, Goldring 1012GX cartridge, Goldring PA1 phono stage, AudioQuest G-Snake Interconnect, Rotel RA-1060 amplifier with Russ Andrews yellow power cable sat on polipods, 2 x 5mtr Kimber 4PR speaker cable, Mission M30i speakers blue tacked to Atacama Nexus 7 stands.
Now apart from a couple of mains conditioners dotted about that’s pretty much it.It’s not the most expensive Hi-Fi to play in this house or ultimately the most capable, but the music it makes brings us happiness at a price, size and convienience we can cope with.
Happy listening!
Follow Ups:
My current favorite system is the least expensive system I've owned in twenty years. I'm getting ready to unload my megabuck amps and preamps.
Price does not equal musicality.
I am also 32, married, kids (the boy is 3 the girl is 1) and have a rent to pay...
Dont know why, but just today got a really BAD itch to buy something, anything hifi. Break the bank/budget is impossible at this point but would have no hard feelings or guilt if i had the extra cash and went out and bought a new amp!
Enjoy the kid and good times, they grow FAST!v.i.
Your true inner audiophile cannot be supressed indefinetely and will reclaim your soul in due time. That doubt and wonder about what is over the next upgrade horizon will soon have its way with you. Do not resist, buy Buy BUY!!!!
You might well be right ! I do keep having urges to try the new ortofon carts, and buy a subwoofer and try a flying mole digital amp and have valves again.......'Make the demons in my head stop !'
I received $876 dollars back from a hospital bill I overpaid. It was totally unexpected.
My first thought was "ok, now what audio stuff can I buy with this"? I decided to bank half and bought a cartridge, some accessories/supplies and vinyl.
It's a sickness I tell you!
A point I think you are making, and it appears sometimes missed when chasing illusive system perfection, is that music is to be enjoyed. And, that the system should please the user.Congrats to you....... and enjoy those tiny "good vibrations"
...that it wasn't the case. Which brings me to my announcement and recommendation for the best budget tweak of all time, and a tweak that even pays you back: I cancelled cable. No more Nancy, Bill, Hannity, (the other guy, whatever his name is), Scarborough, Greta...I watched them all compulsively but with disdain, rubbernecking as if their speciousness were strewn down the asphalt as I silently drove by; while my stereo system sat silently. No more.
