a line-up that includes Hill, Dorham, and La Roca as sidemen is alright in my book.

Nice - thanks! Haven't heard that one, although it is available on RVG CD. "Mode for Joe" was what turned me on to Joe. Joe with Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Bobby Hutcherson, Cedar Walton, Ron Carter and Joe Chambers... I haven't seen much Joe Henderson vinyl around. I'm going to hit a good record store in Victoria, BC this weekend, so will see what I can find.
..."page one".good luck in your searches -- fun stuff!
Not sure if you meant haven't heard them or not aware that I meant the Rudy Van Gelder remastered Blue Note CDs with added cuts (usually) and added liner notes looking back historically at the release.I got into Blue Note in a big way when a local record chain decided to dump slow moving CD stock at 50% off, and that included a lot of Blue Note. I bought every title I could find and got hooked. I've bought a load more in the last two years, and the vinyl just isn't around. For some reason, I missed most of the Blue Note stuff when it came out, as it didn't get airplay or shelf space where I lived. I did get into vinyl Monk, Miles, Herbie Mann, Jimmy Smith, Howard Roberts, John Handy, and a lot of the swing stuff that went before (Goodman, Krupa, Rich, Hampton, et al.
I have Page One and have to agree - great album.
I feel very fortunate to have discovered a gold mine of jazz I missed, that is now increasingly available. I'll keep looking for affordable vinyl, but eBay prices are just beyond me at this point.
thanks for the information. when i said "i'm not familiar with the RVG CDs" i meant that i have never heard or purchased one of them. i do think the liner notes and additional material could be of-interest (though i must say that i'm not a huge 'alternate-take' guy unless i am VERY interested in the material...and even then i only listen to that stuff as a novelty now and again. that's why i don't really listen to the mosaic box sets i have.i do think it's awesome that the good music is available for cheap.
i recall reading that some folks didn't like the sonics on the RVG (new) stuff.... perhaps that he changed the balance a bit?
