Wait, don't answer yet...I don't mean just in generalI have a Michell Gyrodec SE with RB300 w/ Origin Live mod and incognito wiring. Cart situation is in flux at the moment.
I have never really liked the suspension thing on the Michell...it's hard to cue a record without getting it bouncing a little.
I'm thinking of switching to a modded Empire 398 table, replacing the Empire arm with the RB300 and building a heavy plinth for it, maybe selling the Michell sans arm and plowing the cash into a good cart (I'm told a Denon DL301 is a good match for the Empire).
Anyway, is there anyone who's gone this or a similar route and can tell me if I'm nuts to consider it? Or, can anyone offer suggestions on how to make this path a good one?
thanks in advance,

I haven't heard the Mitchel. But I can tell you you can do alot better than the modified Rega. The powder coat on that arm really slows it down.
I have an Empire 208 waiting in line... I would like to have a new top plate machined from solid aluminium plate, and isolate the Pabst motor... shouldn't be that hard of a project... just need the time to do it..
Check out the Atma-shere Empire 208 they modd.. after they are done with it (only problem, it costs $2,000 for full mods!) It will compete with just about any turntable.
Keep us informed what you decide..Rick
correction.. atma-shere mod costs $2800.00!
The subject is/was all the rage here and on Agon.Try a search for "Lenco" or "Rek-o-Kut" or even "Russco".
There are many levels of satisfaction in this hobby. Plenty of room for experiemntation.
You can always buy another Michell if you don't find your own personal nirvana.

I'd do it in a second. But then again, I might be crazy when it does come to vintage tables. I have an Empire 398 and a 598. If I find an RB300 at a good price I would not hesitate to mount it on the 398.
Not missing a thing at all.Much deeper and tight bass. Incredible midrange definition and detail. A high end that is easily the most natural I have heard.
The Empire should be pretty close to my Rek O Kuts. If it has the square Pabst three phase hysteresis motor you may have one big surprise awaiting you.
This thing will have speed accuracy much better than the average turntable.
well, i go to enough swap meets. i know I've seen rek-o-kut B-12 rondines in the past. I'll snap up the next clean one i see.i do like my scottrt modded technics SL-1600MK2/denon-DL103 though. i know you switched from your 1200 to the Rek, but I've done some things differently:
1. i find that the DL-103, at least on my technics, sounds like absolute crap with the recommended 40 ohm loading. i use the 3 ohm setting on my denon AU-320. I'm running over 4mm of VTA with the technics headshell weight/spacer. sounds awesome.
the B-12 Rondine does look HAWT though. i had an Elac with a pabst motor. i gave it to a friend. the motor was cool, but the turntable seemed cheesy to me.
it does have the square Pabst...looks like the armature spins in that open square frame...
High Torque....low vibrations and excellent sound. One inmate referred to this motor as "the flywheel motor." I am not sure of the point of reference, but this thing sure keeps excellent time and has great PRAT.The third phase is accomplished with a faking capacitor. The design is simple and elegant.
I think a heavy plinth and attention to the bearing polish and ball quality will go a long way to getting superb sound.
I just cannot see myself going back to a suspended table any time soon. These papst driven turntables are simply sublime. Close your eyes and the performers are right there for you to enjoy. PRAT lives in these motors.
Yep, I got three of them in my Voyd TT. Most dynamic TT I have heard.
identifying name for these motors. I would like to try one on my Sota bastard table in place of the Teres that I now use. They must be available on EBay.
As such they do not say Pabst on them anywhere. They are a hysteresis motor and have this square frame mount to support the motor. It is a wonderful design and the motors are really well built. Here is a picture of the beast. I will try to take some better pics this weekend.
I have looked many many many times for spares... and have yet to see any on Ebay...
