I recently replaced my Bluenote U3 unipivot tonearm with an Incognito wired RB300 with Pete Riggle vtaf. To get the Benz Glider cart. aligned, I had to position the cart. to the very front of the headshell slots. This was not necessary with the Bluenote tonearm where the cart. sat in the middle of the slots. The U3 uses the same pivot to spindle distance as the Rega. I had to make the hole in the plinth larger to accommodate the brass bushing for the VTAF. My usual method for cart. alignment is:
1 Position cart. quickly using the MFSL GeoDisc
2 Then I go to a db Systems cart. alignment scale (2 points).
This system always works well for me because using the GeoDisc gets the cart. in the approx. position in the headshell before I zero it in using the db Systems scale. It hasn't failed me yet.
My question is this: Is the RB300 possibly shorter in length than the Bluenote? Also, did implementing the Pete Riggle vtaf change the geometry slightly? And finally does any of this matter as long as the cart. is aligned? I'd appreciate any input. Thanks, Nick
Follow Ups:
Although both arms have identical spindle to pivot distance of 222 mm, their eff. lengths and overhang are different. The U3 has 233 mm & 11 mm overhang while the rb 300 has a 237 effective length and 15 mm overhang. I think the 4 mm difference in overhang will make you feel you are moving the cartridge more forward. Hope this helps.
Actually that does make sense to me about the difference of effective lengths and overhang. What John added further explains my problem. Which as it turns out is not a problem at all. I use the GeoDisc to get me in the ballpark and the db Systems grid to tweak it in. Those are the only two alignment tools I have. I used them on my old Thorens TD166 MkII, an old Lenco direct drive, a VPI HW19jr w/Audioquest PT7 tonearm and the Bluenote U3. The results were all about the same with the cart. sitting about mid-way to 3/4's in the headshell. As you can imagine I was a bit surprised to find the cart. almost all the way forward on the RB300 using this method of alignment. But, it is perfectly aligned in this position and even better it plays music. Thanks for all the info, Nick
> I think the 4 mm difference in overhang will make you feel you are moving the cartridge more forward. It is actually a 6.3-mm difference in overhang when he uses a GeoDisc and a DB Systems protractor for alignment. These are both Baerwald protractors and require an overhang of 17.3-mm in the Rega tonearm. Therefore, the cartridge is truly moved forward in the headshell slots.
> My question is this: Is the RB300 possibly shorter in length than the Bluenote? That's a logical possibility!

Probably not!
> And finally does any of this matter as long as the cart. is aligned?
Absolutely not!
As long as you get your tonearm perfectly aligned using the GeoDisc and also the DB Systems protractor, you are in very good shape. The Rega tonearm is designed for a different, less optimal, alignment. As such it requres moving the cartridge forward in the headshell slots and turning the cartridge inward slightly to achieve a good alignment with the two protractors you are using. However, your two protractors will provide the best alignment possible for your Rega tonearm.
Thank you John. You answered my questions fully and simply. That's all I asked for. Now, on to some listening enjoyment. Thanks again, Nick
Go to the vinylengine.com and look both up in the tonearm database located in the library, it also gives the null points for the RB-300... the RB-300 appears to have longer eff. length, but the mounting distance is exactly the same.
Just align it at 60mm and everything is good to go if the spindle to pivot center is still 222 - 222.8 mm.Otherwise use both null points but the inner point is more critical from my direct experience.
