Although it's painful, I prefer to admit it when I buy a dud, take my loss and look for something better. I bought a P3 a couple of years ago and it almost ended my (re)discovery of vinyl. I am not an anti-Rega guy - I own and have written raving reviews for the Rega Apollo, but for $700 I don't think that the P3 is a good deal at all (nor are most of the other "modern" tables in this price range; I also bought and immediately re-sold a Pro-Ject.)
As I've written many times, in the sub $1K market your best bet are some vintage tables. I would not trade my Thorenses (124, 125) or Empires (398 and 698) for any modern table.

I agree. Under $1000, a used TT is the best value. If I only have this amount to spend on one TT, I would consider a good used Linn LP12 Valhalla with Ittok, for example. The problem is that the beginners would be intimidated with tuning and maintaining it. A new TT for this budget is usually simpler design and requires less maintenance, but few sound nearly as good as an old Linn.As for Rega P3, the only thing good about it is the RB300 that comes with it. The table itself can be easily beaten by many used tables that can be had for token amount of money.

Linn are notoriously challenging to set-up, but the Empire 698 I bought (for $400!) is a piece of cake to set-up and sounds great. Perfect for newbies.
but it requires some more fiddling. However, the reputed springs out of whack, not level, difficult every 3 month fiddling is not consistent with my experience. Kind of an urban myth.
