No noise? On classical records? Without an RCM? No groove rush, swish, or any ticks? On typical records of interest to music lovers? At "room filling" volume? Color me skeptical. I've heard this claim before, but this has never been my experience. It sounds like hyperbole. For pop music I can believe that the noise floor wouldn't usually be bothersome on reasonably well cared for Lps when listening over speakers.
Follow Ups:
No noise. How loud are you playing these LP's? I have carefully maintained and stored LP's from the mid 60s on. I own London, Decca, RCA Living Stereo dogs, Mercs, DGG tulips and plain, Telarcs, M & K, D2D, Fulton Ark, Levinsons, etc. etc. My collection goes from Back to Shostakovich and occasional newer music. Some chamber and many orchestral/concerto and solo literature. Not to mention a modest jazz and 70-90's pop/rock section. Swish and groove noise at the beginning of some LP's (London most commonly) is present not on even the majority and certainly minor.I am sorry, I exaggerate not. I don't know what you folks are doing, unless abusing the records or playing the same one over and over.
If you check my multiple posts, I am NOT a analog enthusiast only, but quite skeptical myself. And guests and friends of my age (mid 50's) are amazed since they are under the impression that analog reproduction is very noisy. In fact, if those problems truly plagued even let's say 30% of my (non thrift or donated) LP's, I'd consider dumping all of it today.
I don't have an RCM....yet. I am currently handcuffed by sink washing and discwasher D4 system. However, I typically don't use the D4 solution and just dry brush prior to play.On well taken care of vinyl when I put the needle in the run in a majority of the lps are dead silent at modest volume levels and would be so at even higher. For the most part the ones that aren't are abused vinyl from days of youth and lack of knowledge or consideration to the care of the lps. There are a few lps that have irritating noise floor and I continue to try to upgrade these copies. And, my gear is not "high end". In fact is is vintage dual tt, marantz receiver and advent speakers. I like it that way. I like the idea, to me, of playing a vintage medium on a vintage system.
Enjoy, the sounds of silence!
started my system, played 5 min of Brahms Violin Concerto, thin Dutch pressed Philips of Henryk Szeryng playing with Haitink/Amsterdam Concertgebouw in their hall, mid 70's. Yes, this one has some small ticks on the first movement (I remember noting that about a year ago) but a very silent background through most of it and oh, the sound of that violin and orchestra!I do believe and accept that CD's also can be good. I just have to fix my player or change it out. But, from experience, I know that it will take some effort to beat my analog stuff.
