Guys,
I've had the L-70 up and running for a couple of years now and love this table.Heavywieght cld plinth,OL1 tonearm,103r cart.
The bearing is very clean and the captive ball and thrust plate look good.I use moblie 1 10w30.
What concerns me is rundown time frome start to stop is only 24 seconds.Iv'e read posts were platter rundown is well over a minute.Should I be concerned, possibly get a new captive ball?,and thrust plate?.Thanks for any help
Rob.
Follow Ups:
Glenn in Portland ordered one for his Lenco and said it improved his sound very nicely.Simply go to the 0-30 weight Mobile 1 oil and the silicone nitride ball. You can buy the balls from McMaster.com. I paid less than 10 dollars for two balls.
Polishing the bearing is a good idea. Not the well, just the shaft and thrust plate.
Cheers!
Can you email me privately at jim_howard_pdx@yahoo.com. Got some information on a project I am working on with Colby.
RobI am using an old L70 that I have had for 40 years.
I have used a thinned Mobil 1 10W30 thinned with air tool oil to about 5W30 consistency. The rundown of the platter averages about 29-30 revolutions over a period of more than 1 minute. It requires re-lubing about every 2 years. - and it takes a few weeks before the bearing settles back in to the previous performance level.Several of the spindle bearing re-build kits boast even longer rundown times. Requires polishing of the bearing surface and installation of new ball, thrust plate and a larger/deeper oil retainer. I haven't felt this was necessary.

This is interesting because I purchased an L70 that I believe was in original condition (one owner prior to myself). It had grease in the main bearing very similar to the grease in the motor bearings.I cleaned it up, replaced the grease and it will coast for almost 2 minutes before stopping from 33rpm. No leaks or other issues.
I've read that some of these bearings were designed for grease, and from the construction on my L70 I can see that there is not an oil-tight seal on the bearing housing. Did Lenco use more than one style of bearing housing or ???
Thanks,
The Lenco bearing uses both grease and oil. The oilite sintered bushes are kept wet by oiling the felt pad round the spindle. The ball bearing and lower housing for the thrust pad are packed with grease.
last year I had two turntables offered to me. One was an Garrard 401 with SME 3012 arm (bugger no cartridge) and the other was a Rola Professional. I paid the chap US$200.00 and couldn't get out fast enough but as I was leaving I spotted a Commonwealth Electronics sitting on the ground behind his counter and asked him if it was for sale. As ii turned out I was given it because it did not work. when I got home I decided to see if I could get it working and decided to pull the platter first and what I noticed bought a smile to my face. These idlers are meant to have a light smear of oil on the bearing as the platter sits on two ball bearings, one on top of the other. What some idiot had done was pack the well full of grease and stopping the platter from turning. Cleaned it out and the rest is history. If you ever come across these tables that are not working make sure you check the well as sometimes it can pay off in a big way.
