In the case of the Herbie von Karajans you are mistaken.
The 'A9' that you see stands for a matrix which has been mastered/cut in January 1969.
Originally, DGG gave the exact date of mastering...until mid '50s
After 1970 they amended the info to, say, D70 = April 1970.
The alpha sequence runs from A to M (12 months).
There is (on German pressings) additional stamper info - usually @ right-angles to the label...this will give some idea (or not) of the # of times the master has been pressed from.
Also, the < 1960s discs contain the initials of the cutting engineer. The Philips LP you mention is possibly 6580 082 - and on Dutch Philips matrices '670' (also used overseas) they don't use 'A1/B2' - but 1Y/2Y to denote side 1 or 2 ('Y' is the stereo indicator - mono was 'L')...followed by the 'cut' - ie 1Y4 / 2Y1 - as on theabove LP.
The (P) 1974 denotes the publication date of This compilation - they are c.1960 recordings - and the matrix #s are mismatched - showing they were originally differently coupled. The pressing #'s involved are as an undechipherable sequence after the 'p' date.
Follow Ups:
Thanks for the details. However, the Karajan "Eroica" is marked A9/B7 - stamped letters followed by hand-inscribed numbers.
The Gazzelloni is as you say - 1Y2 and 2Y1 (sic), (and a stamped 'p'1974). Catalogue# is 6500 707. Were the 1960 recordings multitrack and released as stero at that time? I'm assuming they must have been as I can't believe Philips would have been passing off mono processed into pseudo-stereo without mentioning so on the sleeve.
"However, the Karajan "Eroica" is marked A9/B7"
Which should mean:-
Side One: cut/mastered January 1969 / Side Two: February 1967.
The basic stamped sequence should be (P)1962 A9 - then some initials.
If you've additional 'hand-inscribed numbers' then it's likely a non-German (probably UK) pressing of the German matrix pressed in the '70s. The pressing country is on the label.
(&, presumably, you don't have a French/Italian copy..).The Vivaldi is a later re-recording (probably have this one too) - as 6500 *** is the full-price series.
I Musici recorded in stereo from 1957/8 - there are a lot of Vivaldi titles. One very early (1959) release was SABL 102 - also as mono ABL3237 - of various Vivaldi concerti..
Now I can understand the double-digit numbers on the Karajan "Pastorale"!Thank you very much indeed (BTW - both the Karajans are definitely German pressings, following your info).
As an aside, these LP's demonstrated to me (once again) that you cannot assume that the condition of an LP sleeve is any gauge of the disc - I've found spindle-marks that indicate side 1 of the Vivaldi was on a TT platter maybe once or twice, otherwise they are all mint/unplayed.
