I'm not talking about 1970's repressings on Columbia or the 1997 CD remaster, but an actual recent reissue on vinyl, like a 180-gram, uh, "audiophile" pressing.
I know this album sounds pretty bad, just a question regarding reissues...

Follow Ups:
I picked up a sealed new copy on Columbia records S125018 yesterday. It's on heavier vinyl (I think 180g?). The back says that its mixed by Bowie and Pop. What copy is this? Is it considered one of the better versions?
Thanks

http://www.vinyl.com/product_id/LPCOLU32111I think it's the same one I've got. Bought mine for $5, though. It's a '70s or '80s reissue on decent-enough vinyl and it probably sounds as good as that album (or that mix, anyway) ever will.
One I know is an original 1973 pressing, the other is a still-sealed 2006 reissue.
The older pressing was cheap, I think the whole deal came to $7 including the shipping and handling.

I have an original LP on Columbia and the 1997 remaster by Iggy on CD. On the CD you can hear a lot more of what the Stooges intended. The original recording suffers from major Bowie damage, but my does Williamson kick ass, even as The David tries to cut the balls off perhaps the hardest rocking band ever. Williamson does a screaming vivisection on the body of Chuck Berry while the rhythm section just chugs merrily along, like it has seen much worse. And Iggy is simply Iggy - well, that's never simple. It's funny that your CD sounds so bad. I'd look for an LP of the Iggy remix because it removes a lot of the Bowie production crap.

The 1997 Iggy Raw Power remix is available on vinyl - not sure if it's on heavy vinyl or not. Not that it would make any difference. Why screw up one of the best sounding records of all time by giving it the audiophile treatment?
Give me rhythm or give me death!
yes, it has been reissued as a 180g. you should be able to find it for 10 bucks, and it sounds pretty swell. as good as an original? hard to say, but certainly worth the 10 bucks. as others have said, an alltime classic.

It's a Columbia reissue, and they're actually using the original prefix and number (KC32111).
Got it and an original from Ebay.
Excellent!

they go for a pretty penny these days. make sure when you get it that it really is an original. a lot of dealers advertise them as originals, but they usually have a pc prefix, or they're the reissue with the kc prefix. the inner sleeve is best way to tell.
and they go pretty cheap. This one was something like $5.
When I said "original," I meant an early-1970's Columbia pressing instead of a 21st Century repop.
I have a few PC-prefix Columbias and they don't seem to be any better or any worse than any of the other red/orange label variety.

the pc is fine. it's just that the kc is rarer. I don't think that columbia pressed up many of them, and probably pressed up more the 70's reissues due to the punk rock explosion.
I seem to recall seeing a reissue in the vinyl bins at Rhino Records a few years back.
...Raw Power was recorded so poorly that cheap beer, bong water and hypodermic needle scratches may actually help the sonics. It is one of the greatest albums ever...the Stooges kick ass!

I purchased a new copy a few year back at the local Tower Records. It was just a 21st century reissue.Production of that LP is so dismal that an audiophile pressing would be ludicrous. It has some of the muddiest bass guitar ever recorded and it sounds like many tracks were ping-ponged together with all of the associated loss of fidelity.
A classic for sure, and in my days of playing loud abrasive music I produced more than one one my own tunes using the Lead-guitar-out-of-left-field-brighter-and-louder-than-any-reasonable-person-would-consider that is a hallmark of "Search and Destroy".
but rather an original. I have a cppy of the 1997 CD remaster that a buddy gave to me and it's just horrible. It crackles like it was the world's only CD with groove damage.
Trying to parse through them on Ebay isn't that easy, though. Are the 21st Century reissues still on the Columbia label?
Seems you can still find unopened copies from the mid-1970s.
