I acquired Jimmy Smith, Midnight Special on Blue note, stereo, ST-84078, 1963.My copy seems to be very poorly recorded. I deep cleaned the grooves but no help. Could this be a bad pressing? Any other experiences?
Follow Ups:
i have a mono copy of BN4078, and it sounds great.can you be a little more specific as to which pressing you have?
it could also be that the prior owner did something to cause groove damage (while not scratching the record).
The sound fades in and out and sounds muddled. As far as which pressing, this is where my knowledge is limited. I thought that the number ST-84078 identifies the pressing.
unfortunately, ST-84078 is only a start. can you tell us if there is writing that curves around the center hole (e.g., "New York USA", "Division of Liberty", etc.)? What color is the label (or colors)? What is the address on the bottom of the back cover? What is the matrix # in the deadwax? Thick/thin vinyl? This will help identify what you have and then maybe someone can tell if it is a general defect (unlikely) or a problem with your specific copy.
It doesn't look so good, but after cleaning it twice, it plays well, with a few burps et al. And I believe it was 1960, not '63. Not that it matters.
I wonder how many pennies a previous owner might have had on their tonearm? All my wife's Jimmy Smith records sound great, Cheers

If I had more money I'd soon be broke...but I'd have more LPs!
but what is "Pickwick"?
"Best of 1960" type LPs. But they did reissue some great titles, some by Stan Getz, Duke Ellington, Jimmy Smith (of course), and many others.

Nice JS collection. I have only three of those. I have one entitled "Respect" that has a really cheesy cover showing JS in several karate stances. The cheesy cover does not do this album justice. I highly recommend it.
My favorite is "Prime Time" an awesome 'must have' Jazz

..from E-Bay because people don't seem to expect a lot for them... yet.
Not Blue Note's or Van Gelder's BEST effort, but this is a fine recording . . .
