friends attending Tech. So far, he says he thinks all are OK. His only comment on the shooter was"if he'd tried it here, WE (cadets) would have shot the asshole."

I wonder what one could do when confronted by a maniac like this piece of shit. I can never understand why they do this damage then take their own life. I say he should have fired the last shot first and save so much heartache. It leaves me feeling so much sadness to see this as we were on holidays a few years ago in one of the most beautiful places in Tasmania where 35 people lost their lives to a shooter but this prick never had the guts to shoot himself. To go to a place like that after the event sort of brings it closer to the heart and makes me wonder how people can carry on with their lives after experiencing something as terrible as this. I am sure the support they get will hopefully go a long way in helping.

It's a military college not far from Virginia Tech. My brother - in - law, a colonel in the Army, graduated from there. VMI is perhaps most famous for the participation of a unit of its students - called cadets - in the Battle of New Market in the US Civil War. Wikipedia has a good article on the school.
