Well I had a bit of a hard time with this. It was hard to dial in at first. I wasn't sure what VTF to use. The elipticle that come with the 501 needed about 1.95g. I never cared for this cart with the elipticle stylus. I found a sweet spot with just under 1.8g VTF with the retip. I can now say what this cart does very well. On very nice pressings every note has more weight. It's like upgrading your amp. My descroption would be what someone said in a review of the ASL Hurricain's. More weight and breath to everything. That along with the Shelter midrange. I had some trouble with the bass on the 501 at first. Now that I have things tuned well the bass is very good. I can say this is probably the best cart I have ever heard. The 17d3 is great in it's own way. So is the retipped 103R. I still love them all. But I have to give the retipped 501 a thumbs up overall.

Could you give a little more on the comparison between them? In what areas does the SS/501 surpass the DL103R?
Well it's impossible for me to explain the difference between the two. The only way I can explain it is the 103r wants to be turned up. But when turned up it sounds turned up. It distorts in a pleasant way. When the Shelter is turned up it still retains it's audiophile qualities. Right now my system is cranked up. But I can still hear seperation between instruments.
