I have had this Empire table for over 6 months. One thing really bothers me about this table is the height of the cue lifter. I am using a DL-103R. I have already adjusted the cylinder of cue mechanism to the lowest point by using a paper clip to the holes on cylinder. But the stylus is still sitting about 3/4" above surface of record. In this position, the stylus is basically slamming into the record surface when I lower the tonearm. I am wondering whether anyone has better way to adjust this. I see a couple of screws under the base of cue mechanism. I am curious to know whether I can lower the entire cue mechanism by loosen the screws.
Follow Ups:
I gave up trying to get my 698 to cue down. Sometimes it sticks, other times it comes down too fast. I love the cue-up at the end of the record, but I actually prefer to lower the needle by hand.
Check the cue lift speed control under the turntable.
So descent is just too fast? Have you checked out cue adjustment pot under the base?
Actually, I have already adjusted the cylinder to lowest point. I found the mechanism sitting too high. I would like to have it lowered so that the cartridge won't be too high above the record.I am currently using a Denon DL-103R. The problem with cue mechanism sitting too high is that I can't get optimum tonearm height I want. Now my tonearm is a bit in a tail down position
The operation of the cueing for a 698 is quite sensitive to the hieght of the tone arm assy. To high or to low will have signifant effect to cueing operation. This also applies to the 598's.
On the 698 the 'lift' cylinder/plunger is sometimes sticky from age and/or dryness. I have found that sewing machine 'needle/thread' lubricant will migrate in around the plunger with some patience.
This is NOT regular sewing machine oil! It is a very low viscosity clear lubricant in a small squeeze bottle. Appears to be a sylicone/synthetic.
I have bought/rebuilt/sold ten or more 698's and have a Tech that has found the path to completely refurb all issues with a 698 includeing the complete rebuild of the 698 tone arm including complete rewiring.
He has also mastered the complete rebuild of the cueing mechanism. All issues.
With the arm lift plunger in the up position adjust the arm mechanism so the stylus is a quarter to three eight's above the playing surface. The arm will be 'low' at the heel. This is the case with most EMPIRES.
If you feel the need to correct the VTA, do it with the cart mounting.
Your 698 is a premium piece of gear, just realize it has a 'personality', perhaps more so than some others.
