I got this on the cheap yesterday. Everything is great except for the headshell. Some idiot managed to break two of the leads. Instead of replacing them they decided to glob a bunch of solder on some oversized potmetal connectors so the left channel didn't work. So I guess I'll be upgrading the tonearm right away. Does anyone have a 3009 they want to get rid of? what makes a good armboard for this? I also plan on upgrading the power cord and possibly building a custom plinth for it. I'm interested to hear how it compares to my technics. Any advice for a Thorens TD 125 noobee?

Great find! I would try to repair that arm, don't toss it. Maybe a TP13(TD150) headshell would fit this arm as well, alas Thorens headshells are hard to find.
The great thing about the Td125 is the big removable armboard, you can mount any 9 inch arm. Make a new armboard from maple or hardwood, make sure you get the pivot to spindle distance right.
Check the Analog Dept, great site on all things Thorens.

Hi,
I am using a 125mkII with and SME 3009II imp. It is a great combination. As to cartridges, it is the arm that limits the choice. Both your arm and an SME will wll work better with a highish compliance cartridge. Both the Shure M97xE and the AT 440mla are good choices. If you live in a wooden house with springy floors the Shure with it's damping brush works great. I was not able to walk in the room with the AT and with the Shure and the damping I can walk anywhere. I also got a new mat (Herbie's way excellent) it was better than the stock rubber one you have. I also removed the bottom, You may email me if you have any other questions.
That is a great-looking 125. I love mine. But your arm is different. If you decide to sell that arm, please email me!
I have an extra headshell for it.I am planning to put a thick base-plate on mine, made from 17mm birchply. Mine didn't run when I got it, but good advice from this board (regarding capacitors) helped me.
Arm boards are fairly easy to make for those. Use MDF or exotic wood of the same thickness.

Nice score, good luck on the sme 3009.
Polish the bearing, replace the oil, remove the botom plate,
find a new mat and adjust the sproingy bits.
thanks, I am still trying to figure out how to adjust the springy bits. There is no bounce to it and it takes a fair amount of pressure to press the upper plinth down. There is inly about 1/4 of an inch travel. How springy should it be?
White knobs for adjustment are on the underside of the deck
and will be revealed if you remove the bottom plate. Your
should be able to push the top plate down with a light finger
anywhere, sounds like it too stiff right now.
heya nubz-nice score-- i had a 125mk2 for a few years with a stanton 681 on it.. great combination! definitely a rock and roll 'table.. i traded it in on a sota, and i'm not sure i was happy again til i ditched that for another thorens (but a 124 this time.).
i never did a thing to it, and was always psyched at it's rock solid lack of bullshit and reliability.. utterly unfussy and good sounding, and with a big bassy cart like the 681, ballsy as all getout. it didn't like grados (probably the prestiges.. i was just outa college).. that's about all i remember-- but it had a stock thorens arm.
good luck with it!
thanksI was hoping to put a LOMC cart on it, but I've read that most don't work well on this table.
