It took me a really long time before I understood Charlie Parker. For years, I was reluctant to get into him, thinking that he was super-complex and required a greater understanding of music in general and jazz in particular to listen to properly. And then one day, I bought this record, realized who he was playing with, and then said "Oh -- I get it. Parker just *swings*.I know -- I'm slow.
This blue label Royal Roost, LP 221, is in pretty good shape. The players are Charlie "Chan," Miles Davis, J.J. Johnson, Max Roach, Duke Jordon and Tommy Potter. Every song is under three minutes long, but they all smoke.
Follow Ups:
I once read guitarist Barney Kessel had played with Bird a couple of times and still didn't get it. Then, when he was listening to a Parker record one morning while shaving, he got it. I once sold a Parker record because i didn't get it. It's like classical, you have to learn how to listen to it.

that's the core CP group. Who's on piano, Duke Jordan? Bass?Miles says that Duke Jordan has a tuff time following Bird - gets lost. I like Duke Jordan. complex player. Anyway, re-reading Miles autobiography and seeing CP up there laughing like that is a blast when thinking of all the Bird stories Miles remembers.
