Assuming you can locate the vacuum retrofit mechanism, I believe it would be a significant improvement because I am in the camp of those who are convinced that the interface between the record and the platter is extremely important. That said, the next logical question is whether anyone has made a direct comparison between the vacuum and a really good record clamp.
Follow Ups:
make most recordings sound recessed. They simply lack a life like expression in my opinion.I have several friends with Sota's and they are very happy with their purchase.
For me I just need to hear more life and more gusto. Listening to records I knew really well convinced me that vacuum creates just as many issues as it resolves.
I think a properly executed mat or lack of same and the lightest possible clamp force to execute the coupling is where I plan to travel.
Knowing your attention to detail, I bet you could build a vacuum hold down that had life like sound!
i'm hoping to be able to find a rotating air/vacuum bearing assembly that will fit around the existing shaft, since i'm not confident that i'll be able to source the original parts. then i'll look for a vacuum pump and a platter mat that will accomodate the vacuum. i've contacted the micro seiki users group as well for input.
currently i'm using the mystic carbon fibre mat, and a custom clamp. i'm happy with this but as you know, we're always searching for the ultimate.......
unlikely any 3rd party solution would work. There's also the platter itself. Does your existing platter have vacuum hold down capability?
