just took a big hit from Bill Maher who clearly has never heard a high end vinyl rig.Bill apparently is tired of hearing that vinyl reproduction is superior to CD.
After an initial period of consternation I'm starting to think this is good for me, as the search for used vinyl at this summer's garage sales might be less competitive.
Follow Ups:
one is the music fan who probably never heard an LP and just assumed CDs were better because they're the current medium of choice for the mass-market.
The other CD person is the Tick and Pop Hater. That perfectly defines a couple of friends of mine. They freely admit that LP playback is generally superior, but they can't stand a single tick or pop. The first speck of dust or cat hair the stylus hits, they're gone.

The third category is one I fall into, that of a person who knows good LPs played on properly set up equipment sound better than their Redbook CD counterparts, but also realizes that well done SACDs and DVD-As can come tantalyzingly close to, if not better their LP counterparts. My listening since I got my new Cambridge Audio DVD player (also plays SACDs and regular CDs) is about 75% vinyl and 25% DVD-A and SACD.

The best SACDs and DVD-Audios are quite enjoyable, if just a small step down from the ultimate realism of the best LPs. But the format I listen to the most is analog cassette; it is nice to have choices.

I play my SCD-1 about 10% to 20% of the time.. also nice to use for background music, so I don't have to jump up and pick-up the tonearm.
SACD had real promise, but there just isn't enough popular music available in the format.
I was speaking kind of generally, too, Henry. I'll bet not one out of 100 people have even heard of SACD.
I had a Sony player and was buying SACDs but in the end gave the player to my kid (he needed it to play DVDs). I'd have happily replaced my entire CD collection with SACDs but the stuff I wanted to hear never became available and never will.

more is coming. Acoustic Sounds currently has 2,455 SACDs in various formats available. They also have several hundred DVD-A discs.

but the stuff that really lights my fire isn't in there and never will be.

In the anime series Eureka 7, LP's are still around and popular among the counterculture types 10,000 years in the future. The characters also listen to FM radio on what appear to be copies of 70's Japanese receivers.
Maher is a smart guy. He probably has a houseful of vinyl and a $30,000 rig. This is probably his own attempt to reduce the competition for rare vinyl!
I think Maher is simply contrary for the sake of contrary, not necessarily smart. He talked smack about teachers and lost my attention forever.
:P

I was just trying to be a smart-a$$. I haven't watched Maher in 4-5 years...and even then it was just sporadic.
but I couldn't come up with a snappy response :)
