I can't say I have ever listened to a Rod Stewart lp and walked away thinking it sounded great. OK but not great.
You can imagine my disappointment when I listened to Never A Dull Moment on Mercury yesterday for the first time.
Does anyone find the same with Rod Stewart or is it just me.

Follow Ups:
Steward provides the vocals on this great album. Sound on several of the cuts is pretty good, but the performances are really quite fine.Enjoy!
I heard a few, "Never a dull Moment" is dull (even from DCC), unfortunately. The MTV "Unplugged" is excellent from Songs AND Sonics
I think it's Rod's best album.
My pressing is a bit on the sibilant side, but other than that the sonics are terrific, especially the string bass on some of the tracks.
"Italian Girls" just blows me away every time I hear it.

And I have the red Merc as well which is less sibilant than the reissues I have. I love the whole album, one of several albums that completely engage me, every time I put this album on while I'm doing something else I usually find I can't stay out of the listening room.Picture is also a great album and would love to find a copy of that on the red Merc label, as well as a copy of Gasoline Alley.
Dude, you always mention how Italian Girls blows you away and it does me too but so does Rods version of Angel. A little deep in the bass on my copy but I'm not complaining. This band had everything clicking back in the day, great blues riffs, excellent drumming and wonderful bass, as well as all the other instruments the guys played, they just did it all well.
I remember seeing them on Don Kirchners "Rock Concert" way back when and would love to see that on video, have never looked for it and have no idea if it's available.
but the sonics never leave me feeling great after listening to him. The music generally feels dull.

Maybe you have a later pressing or something.
Seems to me, if anything the mix is hot. Stewart's voice is close-miked and saturates the master tape.
But the instruments hit with a wallop. Bass especially, but also the drums.
Mandolin comes through beautifully, too.
It almost sounds to me like all of the tracks from Every Picture Tells A Story and Never A Dull Moment were recorded at the same session.
TAS chose Gasoline Alley as one of it's all-time best-sounding rock albums. I'm almost ashamed to say that I've had a copy for several years and have yet to play it.

Growing Older But Not Up.
I have both a red Mercury copy of Gasoline Alley and even a UK Vertigo swirl and neither sound good to me. I love the music, particularly Cut Across Shorty, but the sonics are mediocre to my ears. On the other hand, Every Picture Tells a Story and Never a Dull Moment on red Mercury (Gilbert Kong cut) sound fantastic.Reading threads like this one make me wonder why the different perspections. Is it due to different views of what "good sound" is? Is it due to different systems? or is it the different pressings?
The solo drums on I'm Losing You from every pix are impressive indeed. I have every pix and never a dull moment on original merc red labels, but find the later skyscraper labels sound about as good.every picture tells a story and never a dull moment are my recommended stewart albums. I have quite a few others but mostly b/c each contains a track or two I really like. If I had to give up all but two, every picture and never a dull moment would be the keepers.
