...proper function seems to always look right to me.
The form follows function crowd are simply ignoring the rules of marketing. Simply stated the form follows the design and the function is an aspect of the engineering and attention to detail. So you can have a superb looking device with excellent sound as long as everything is attended to. Your project table is an excellent example of superb form and excellent function.
Taking cars as a group, a Ferrari does not have to look like a Ferrari. It could look like a Porsche or a Corvette.
It does not.
All three automobiles are pretty damn fast and exciting cars. Each one is a world class performance sports car and each one is an antithesis of form follows function.
Each one is designed to attract an audience. The very feel, smell and look of the vehicles are sexy and spectacular.
I am about honesty and the form follows function crowd are just ignoring everything that went into a turntable's design. There is not a single turntable ever built that has a pure form follows functionality.
I just learned a valuable lesson about this myself, which makes me believe that you are correct.
Long story short, I built a stereo cabinet a few years ago which main function was to look good in the LR which would please my wife. Its function was poor at best. Nothing but a PITA to do anything with the equipment. I always grumbled when having to change anything other than a record. Bottom line is that neither one of us is happy with the arrangement. I am an experienced woodworker with design experience as well. It is built and finished properly, but the thing never has looked correct. There is something missing that I have never been able to put my finger on. It just looks too bulky, even though our room is big with cathedral ceiling. So I've ordered an open rack with her blessing.
But as i pondered the problem it seem to come to me that when one emphasizes either form or function to the detriment of the other, the balance is thrown off and you end up getting neither. This has been my experience.
Life has lots of trials and lots of music to help us through them.
