I write a weekly newspaper column. I call it Sam's World and, sometimes, I write about LP scrounging. Out of the blue a couple weeks ago, an elderly reader emailed to say he had some LPs he wanted to show me. I thought, maybe, this was someone who wanted to sell me a pile of uncared for LPs at some ridiculous price.Ever curious, I went to see him after work today.
I walked away with:
Jim Hall - Concierto
Brubeck with Gerry Mulligan - Blue's Notes
Charlie Byrd - Byrd and Brass
Modern Jazz Quartet - The Last Concert
Zoot Sims and the Gershwin Brothers
Ella Fitzgerald and the George & Ira Gershwin Songbook
Eral Fatha Hines - The Incomparable ...
Art Tatum - Classic Solos
Basie and Zoot
The Oscar Peterson Big 6 at Montreux
Ella Fitzgerald at the Montreux Jazz festival 1975
Jazz at the Santa Monica Civic '72 (Pablo three-LP set)
Brubek Quartet - Time Out
Brubeck Quartet - Gone with the Wind
Dave McKenna - Giant Strides
Benny Carter - The King
Charlie Byrd - Sketches of BrazilAnd that was just the first pile! All in beautiful condition and 50 cents each!
And what a gentleman, too. I think I'll go back to say hello and see how he's doing. He has stories to tell!

Like you say, good records but not one of those "pinch me
am I dreaming" finds. Is your column on-line anywhere?

He wouldn't have gotten much more from a dealer or on Ebay, after expenses. The titles are not very valuable- but great sound and sonics.
Best,
You know what? He wanted to "give" them to me. For nothing. He justed wanted them in good hands. Someone who would "appreciate them." I let him set the price.I'll tell you also that he wanted me to take the Dual TT and another hundred or so classical LPs just to be rid of them. Tomorrow, he's carting everything to the library donation pile.
Sheesh.
from a retired audio salesman. He had just moved to a condo in Florida, wife passed away, and his current audio interest is 100% digital. He was selling his turntable and record collection.
He knew he was asking for less than 10% of what they are worth, but he wanted them to go to someone who would care for them and appreciate them for what they are. The box was chuck full of virgin vinyl pressings from MFSL, Sheffield, Nautilus, Colombia half-speed master (oh well), Sweet Thunder, and even a couple of MFSL UHQR's.
All of them in MINT condition. He even threw in his analog cleaners and various related turntable "tchotchke's" that are easily worth what I paid for the vinyl just by themselves. My first true "haul", LOL.
Cheers,
Me, I'm just a lawnmower, you can tell me by the way I walk....

Minty vinyl is fun to buy for pennies on the dollar. I have been fortunate this last two years. Most of the good stuff I find is coming from people donanting albums to the Library. The Library seels them at their used book sales to raise revenue. I get these for a buck a piece to as low as a quarter a piece.I think I have about 400 near mint albums from these types of sales.
