is a pico second smaller than a nanosecond? probably not.
What's THAT like? Man, that looks like a sweet record. Grant Green records can be hard to find, and I don't think I've ever even seen one of those. Who's Garvin Masseux?
I am actually not a particularly huge GG fan. Nothing personal against Grant -- just that I *tend* not to appreciate the guitar as an instrument in a jazz session. I find that the sidemen he's got are the best predictor of how much I will like the album.In this case, I think Herbie does an amazing job as a sideman. The music is spiritual/gospel, including:
* Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen
* Go Down Moses
* Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless ChildGarvin Masseaux is credited with the tambourine -- you might know him from "African Beat".
Wow, really? No fan of Jim Hall, or Kenny Burrell, or Barry Galbraith, or Bill Frisell, or Johnny Smith? Bucky Pizzarelli? Eddie McFadden? Pat Martino? John McLaughlin?
Herbie Hancock is way great on "Feelin' the Spirit", and that's a classic BN rhythm section--Billy Higgins and Billy Higgins are on a ton of great records. But what I really like about Grant Green is how he seems to know the melody so completely. He plays those single note solos as if he knows what a saxophonist would do with the tune, or a vocalist. To me, he really sings.
I do respect divergent opinions, however, and am happy to hear of any records you guys are less than fond of. If you guys want to get rid of any, let me know. I'm all ears.
...to get rid of any records, but i just generally don't dig the guitar as a jazz instrument, for whatever reason. i do have plenty of burrell records, but i can't say i'm a big fan.it just doesn't strike me as *amazing* (i'm not saying they're not amazing, but while i think it's "good" i just don't feel that special feeling when i'm listening -- i don't get drawn in as i do with other instruments).
One of my Desert Island choices is his "Idle Moments" with Joe Henderson and Bobby Hutcherson

i totally agree. funny, though, that the moments that draw me in the most are those where the guitar moves a bit to the side.
