Hi.Why not put back the old Stanton cartridge & see it will bring back the sound you like?
For me, I never use any 5.1 or even 7.1 HT receivers for decent stereo music, let alone LPs. Musically, they are jokes, IMO. Don't forget they are for movies, totally different sonic equalization.
Follow Ups:
C-J. the stanton tt and cart was sold off on ebay just as i got my new table, so unable to switch out the carts to test. secondly, i know that ht receivers are a joke for music, but i was using the same receiver when listening to the stanton. so as long as that variable stays the same i can focus on the p2 and its sound. i am going to try to make sure everything is set up correctly tonight again.does anyone have any similar experiences with the goldring carts? do they need a sizeable amount of hours before they start to sound good?
series cart. The 1042 is supposed to be pretty good but it's $300+. I did not particularly care for the 1012 I had in a MMF-5 table.

..I use Goldrings own phonostage with it ( PA1 ), so there maybe some synergie going on, but then it does display similar characteristics though a EAR834P.

..the Goldring 1012gx and it's anything but sterile in my 1210mk2, what I have found however is it's VERY sensitive to VTA, tried it in my Dads system over at there house ( his speakers were as much as my system ! ) and it's definatly colder sounding than say a Grado, i'd say the 1012gx is not far off the Ortofon Super OM30, which I reakon gets a bit more out of the groove.

henry, would you mind expounding your post a little more. what did you not like about it?
I found the Goldring to sound, well, sterile. It wasn't bright or anything, just thin and uninvolving. I removed it and installed a Grado Red and all was well. Although Prestidge Grados often have hum problems with Regas I had none with the MMF-5.

Going from the Goldring 1012 to the Dyna 10x5 on my MMF5 was just like night and day, even with the $50 junky block I used as a preamp before I switched to the Jolida. There's not much left to say after that I guess...

Henry, I completely agree with this assesment of the 1006. To me it sounds sterile and lifeless. Don't know if I should eek it out for a while hoping break in will cure it, or just return it now. I'm glad the Grado cart worked out for you, but I've heard bad things about Grado carts and Rega arms (the dreaded "Grado Hum"). Thanks by the way for your input. In that case, are there any inexpensive (less than 200) carts anyone can recommend that have some life to them. I'm looking for something with a warm midrange with some bass authority and gentle highs. Definitely not looking at anything can be described as bright, analytical, harsh, sterile. etc.
If you can run a high output MC cart, I highly recommend the Denon DL-160 or the little brother DL-110. William Thakker on eBay has good prices on them.
Another good choice for your listed listening tastes is the Shure M97xE. It's available for around $60 at Amazon.
