You cannot adjust one without the altering the other. The asylum can get very technical on this issue. On my Grado cartridge even very slight VTA adjustments will help lock in an unbelieveably awesome sound stage.
If I have a sibilant record, I can adjust it for the smoothest response.

Why don't you just come out and say that when you play a Mercury Living Presence LP that you have to drop the back of your tonearm into a 600 foot well!I do love it when someone complains about Mercs being noisy! I always hope they'll complain so much they throw it out so I can catch it.
Damn! Now I'm in the mood to listen to some old Mercs and when I do that I can't listen to anything else for a day or two. Mercs are to Columbias as CDs are to vinyl (Didn't ya just love those tests?).
If I had more money, I'd soon be broke...but I'd have more LP's!
And I love the Mercs too. I buy them almost in any condition, clean them up and see what I can retrieve.
You guys got me thinkin', then digging into my "old" stash in the basement.
Sure enough, found Stereo SR 90054 - 1812 Festival Overture.
Am listening to it now...Shee-it!
This was bought from a guy who was moving, for 50 cents.
NM condition.
Down side, I've had it for 20 yrs and this is the first time it's been played.
Will now be in rotation.
