In Reply to: according to Ed's DB both the 301 & 304 are compatable with a medium mass Rega RB250 arm. posted by OMalley on September 17, 2006 at 18:44:21:
Don't forget that Denon publishes their data at 100Hz. We need the compliance measured at 10Hz.DL-103R: 5cu @ 100Hz = 9cu @ 10Hz.
DL-301 II: 13cu @ 100Hz = 24cu @ 10Hz.
DL-304: 14cu @ 100Hz = 26cu @ 10Hz.The figures at 10Hz are not fact of course but I believe they come pretty close.
Fastener mass = 0.5-1.0g.
Recommended system resonance = 8-12Hz.
RB250 + DL-103R = 11.5Hz system resonance.
RB250 + DL-301 II = 7.8Hz
RB250 + DL-304 = 7Hz.This is all just theory of course...

I should take the added weight off for the 103R?And adding weight for the 301, 304, and 160 would be needed? It did improve the 160.
No, theoretically the reverse. :-) More weight for the 103 and less for 301/304/160. Test it on the tools page.DL-160 compliance @ 10Hz = 18cu.
But in the real world? Who knows? You did get an improvement with adding weight to the DL-160 (moving the system resonance further away from the "perfect" 10Hz) so there's no saying...
You can tweak arm mass and so on, but arms that are meant for low-compliance cartridges will work better with them... the better arms also have better bearings, better anti-resonance design; in the modern ones, better cabling and so on. I'm just pointing out that the Denon is a high-end cartridge despite its price, and deserves the best it can get to show its full performance - rich yes, but even and clean through both frequency extremes.
