of the 304. I have been using one for several years on an SME II arm and like it very much. Have you considered the S1 a t twice the price? I paid about $300 for mine. Liked it so much that I bought a spare. Not sure that I am willing to spring for $750 for about the same cart. As I understand the S1 is to the 304 as is the R to the 103.

that what made me no longer consider it! ;-)There are many cartridges that people report have the qualities I am looking for in the <$500 range. The DV20X, 304, 103D, OC9, Benz ACE, etc. I will get around to them all after a while but if I budget myself too high I won't get around much.
It is possible that the table I am on limits me as well, so going to a higher cost cartridge until I am sure I have a table that can support it might be a waste.
Anyway trying the DL-160 the DL-160 is a
reasonable human being. Interested in a loan of a 304 before you spring for it?
Might as well have your teenage daughter deliver it too!Just teasing you Pat...I can vouch that you can be trusted with a cartridge....at least.
i have removed the extra weight from the rb250 and i don;t know if it made any difference. The sound is thick, best way i can put it. I think this might be a matter of taste, i don't know. One things is taht I fall in with the sound anyway, I get taken away with the music. I find myself going "argh, no topend, and then lsitening all the way thru and enjoying it." Periodically I will think "Thick, that is a bit thick in there". i get the suspicion there is some stuff outside the peripheral i am missing.
I don't do that with the 160. But the 160 is not as realxing as the 103, either. So, yeah, I would love to try the 304. It might be the missing link. I will send you an email.
I am blown away by the generosity in this place.
That's funny, O'Malley. I'm using a DL-103R with a NA Interspace and an OL-1 arm and it sounds anything but 'thick'. It might be a mismatch downstream. I'm running a Denon AU-310 into a Gram Amp 2SE and the DL-103R sounds very composed and nimble. Top end is quite good as well, even into a tube preamp and power amp.I guess synergy is a big part of it. :-)
ultimately it could be taste. I really have no idea except that I don't like the way it sounds.I took the weight off late last night and was tired after all the back and forth with it. But one thing i did was change VTA and i have to double check if it made a difference. It was tail up so I added a mat under my spotmat and it might have made a change but it was late so I can't really say 'till i get home and have another listen.
I added a new opamp in the Bugle as well yesterday. I will put the old op amp back and have another listen as well.
